A very brief summary would be that it's saying 2008 will be a year where big business realises the value of generic domain names, and development of domains becomes more popular as people realise the multiples of income that can be achieved over PPC.

A quote from the article:

“Internet traffic and domains are the prime real estate of the 21st century. This market has matured, and individuals, brands, investors and organizations who do not grasp their importance or value are missing out on numerous levels.” Steve Forbes, CEO of Forbes, Editor-in-Chief of Forbes Magazine and former U.S. presidential candidate.

Personally if I lost my income, I'd sell my house and rent for a few years before I sold my domains.

Only thing I can see going wrong with most of my portfolio is nominet going to the .uk ext and wiping out the .co.uk ext,

Apart from that, no worries.

Do you think the yanks are heading this way?

It would make sense as we are the second largest tld of the english written word. But there again, take a look at all the big live auctions of last year. They were only interested in .com

I think he who has the biggest balls will see the light and invest. They will never receive the same return as .com but that is all but gone for true generics and they will still receive a healthy return on their investment in the UK in the long term.

I see things changing over the next few years and it will be the marketing boys who really take command. Run of the mill .com, .co.uk and whatever will stagnate. What will come into play will be true generics of any tld.

We already see it happening with the .tv tld. We see .tv on our screens almost evey night. To the lamer it means "television". To the learned it is the tld of Tuvalu. A tiny island with a total population of less than 12,000. Amazing what the marketing boys can do!

He who dares wins....

If you have the money to market a name and market it right, it will not matter what the extension is, it will be impregnated on the publics mind and they will type it in their browser.

This is where the marketing boys come into their own. ......
A company has £2mil budget. They cannot afford to buy loans.com as it would cost them £3mil. So they buy loans.am for £50K and they pump the rest into tv advertising, only to be shown in the mornings but they have the money to show it every morning for the next 8 months.

At the end of it, anyone who watches tv in the morning will be typing it into their browser.

.......................

I bought harley.st for £30 last year and 3 months later sold it for £1k to the largest private hospital in Harely St. Some will no doubt call them stupid, but I know they have seen the light. (and so do they) Bump that on the telly long enough and you can kiss the equivalent .com or co.uk goodbye. In fact, http://www.harleyst.co.uk and http://www.harleystreet.co.uk/ were parking pages when I sold harley.st and still are now.

Anyways, just my rant and the way I see things going.

The auzzys and americans are already making inroads - it would not suprise me to see a couple of bigger portfolios ending up abroad.

It is good and bad if the bigger prices get made public... good for people who already own names, bad for those who dont.

I has everything to do with marketing. Buying the name is the easy bit.

Persuading the public to type in an obscure extention is the hard bit and this is only achieved through advertising.

Make sure you read the last four paragraphs folks.

Nah sorry .tv on the tv, sold itself the day it was born. But when building brands, who needs it, stick with the .co.uk and have it everywhere.

I agree with what you say Lee but you have also agreed with what i'm saying.

.tv on the tv, sold itself the day it was born.
It has only sold itself for certain companies precisely because they are advertising on the tv. If they didn't advertise, no-one would know they existed as no-one is going to type anyname.tv into their browser unless they have seen it on the tv and they remember it. So it is down to marketing.

here is a classic example.....
APS Mortgages....... Bad Credit? ...... Want to buy yor council house?

On the telly all the time. Before they started their marketing campaign, the decision has been made to purchase mortgages.tv instead of aps.co.uk (or whatever)

But when building brands, who needs it, stick with the .co.uk and have it everywhere.
Well, they have decided they need it instead of the co.uk because, with the financial backing they see it as a better name than a co.uk

This is what I'm talking about with prime generics in general.
Stick tv adverts up every morning for a few months with loans.am and every morning tv person that needs a loan down the road will be typing in loans.am into their browser.

The way I see it in the future, It will come down to 2 things.
1. Prime generic of what you are trying to sell (no matter what the extention ends in
2. Pump a shit load of money into it and they will visit as they remember it.

Build it, advertise it heavily and they willl come.
