Travelzoo Purchases Fly.com Domain Name for $1.8 Million

NEW YORK, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Travelzoo (Nasdaq: TZOO), a global Internet media company, today announced that it has purchased the Internet domain name fly.com for $1,760,000 in cash. Travelzoo intends to use this domain name for a new information Web site to be launched in February.

"We are delighted to acquire fly.com for our new offering," said Brian Clark, senior vice president and general manager, search products, Travelzoo. "The name is a perfect match for Travelzoo's renowned approach: simple, fun, and world class. Where others see doom and gloom we see opportunities to serve travelers and advertisers with innovative approaches to finding the best values in travel."

The domain name purchase was brokered by Sedo.com, LLC.

Interesting, they obviously needed the money/sale as they paid more than that for it a few years ago.

Have the new owners approached you about the .co.uk? Always nice to have the set :p

Somewhere I read say that they paid $1.5mill a few years back (at PEAK prices), so they have made a bit.

It also shows that the underlying trend is still growing well, if the price when the market is slow is higher than the peak price under 5 years ago!

Correct me if i am wrong, I think they paid £1.5m (pound sterling), so in todays exchange rate they have lost nearly $700k and they have been holding it for about a decade.

These days i go straight to google and type what I'm looking for - I rarely type what I'm looking for in the browser as more often than not I'm going to be faced with an undeveloped website or parking page. I am however one of those 72% as I will also visit a .co.uk first if looking for a UK company, and obviously .com if overseas, followed by net, .org. It all comes down to what you're searching for I guess, most travel related sites I go direct to the .com as i feel they may have more choice, but hey thats just me!

With a sale of this nature it should surely add more value to the .co.uk imo, even though i think they will just geo target like http://UK.FLY.COM and so on...
