“Every time a new star like Susan Boyle is born, there is always a huge surge in new registration activity,” said Nora Nanayakkara, direct of business development at Sedo, a domain name marketplace.

However, she warned that the resale value of such web addresses was relatively low, and not the best way to make a fast buck. “We advise people to not jump on trends like this and instead invest in more generic keyword domains that will result in a far more valuable site and ensure that intellectual property infringement is not an issue.”

As per the other thread - need to stop cybersquatting and the like - as stuff like this gets into the press and gives legit business activities a bad press.

That's strange as a lot of them get parked on Sedo, maybe if they banned TM's or personal names unless it was that person parking them, then Sedo might have solid platform to lecture from.:lol:

Fair point GW I hadnt looked, but it seems a couple are on Sedo's sales system:

Absolute gash worthless names. I haven't checked but most probably are on eBay by chavs and pikeys.

But it those types of names that hit the headlines, be it steve irwin, madelaine mcann etc etc

Well lets just say I sold a domain name through a parking company, having second thoughts about this £300 name I decided that I wanted nothing to do with it and asked for Parking company X to hand back the cash to the gentleman involved.

After a couple of emails saying their was no need because Mr X had already paid, I said I'd still like to hand it back and could they refund him and I'd hand over the name free of charge.

Next thing I know Mr X has received an email from X parking company saying THEY had cancelled the sale because it was against their terms and conditions and trademark infringement.

That made me look like I was lying about the reason for the refund to Mr X, lucky I saved all the emails between me an X parking company and forwarded them to MR X who understood.

So when I see stuff like this it makes me chuckle how they lecture against it on one hand and pocket the cash with the other.

(The name was bought when I first started collecting names, it was a mistake and since learning the rules and how people on here conduct themselves, I no longer get involved. So, so much for this being a den of vipers, other way round actually)

... Sedo might have solid platform to lecture from.:lol:

What they actually said, from above was: we advise people to not jump on trends like this. That doesn't sound like lecturing to me.

I'm sure she'll get it back without difficulty, if she wants it. Here's hoping anyway!

I agree thats how I read it - however then I had a nose about as per GW's post and found that Sedo had the names listed :(

Its not a lecture, however advising people 'not to cybersquat, yet if you are going to, then sell the names via us' is a wierd message.

The message itself from Nora being very sound, however undermined by the (probably automated) actions of the company as a whole.

I Don't think Nora would have had knowledge of the names being on sedo to be fair.

It's just that if you give an interview where you give the impression of an authority or knowledgeable in a subject, then you have to get your own house in order.

It's like the Gordon Brown giving a speech on debt,

F**king hypercrites ( SEDO )

Sedo is cram packed with celebrity names for sale so they don't mind profitting from cybersquatters

What a cheek

That's like a market owner attending the local police commitee and complaining about drug dealers but hiring out stalls to them

I love the title of this thread "Susan Boyle fans turn to cybersquatting"

If the reporter knew anything about domain names it would read

"Cybersquatting fans turn to Susan Boyle"

There you go, much more accurate!

This has just been on sky news - nom's head of legal on there as well.

Great promo for 'domainers' :)
