The biggest question I have as someone new to domaining, regards how nominet differs from other domain issuing agencies

I notice godaddy, dropday etc etc etc dont seem to bother including .co.uk names dropping. So either they cant make money listing .co.uk dropping names, or the process is different so it cannot be so easily exploited. There are both ageing and pagerank .co.uk so there is certainly value in dropping names. Why do .co.uk seem to be different?

The second question is - some here list keyword rich avaliable and droppping names - do they use nominets API and a nominet account to fire queries/ use third party software...if it isnt a secret of the trade, how do they do systematic searches?

Any help useful.. Thanks.

There is no public list of ALL registered .co.uk domains.

Every difference you highlighted comes from that.

Any company wanting to dig for .co.uk domains that expire has to come up with their own lists somehow (or buy data from another company that has) but bottom line is that nobody outside Nominet knows ALL the registered .co.uk domains, no matter how much effort they've put into trying to find them.

All Nominet's processes are described in full on their web site, so there's no secret. Unlike some registries they do not produce a list of expired domains so you need to build this yourself - there are many techniques and these are often kept by individual domainers to keep competitive advantage, although there have been many discussions here, so use the search facility.

The .uk drop market is very competitive with the best domains usually being registered within a fraction of a second of being deleted, so unless you enjoy the technical challenge and are prepared to shell out for Nominet membership and a half decent server, I'd book with some of the many companies and individual members who you'll find on these forums.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

But in a way that is the problem?

I dont see any uk agency listing names about to drop, offering search tools for names about to drop, or offering their services to catch them - as for example snapnames/namejet etc do on .com

Who are the respected players in that business?

Dropping names are generally not listed as it is against the Nominet T&C's (you can list a limited subset and I think some still offer this). It wasn't against the T&C's until a year or so ago when they updated the DAC service and more or less killed the drop list market over night.

With the greatest respect - how much searching have you done? Search the forums and you'll find lots of private catchers and companies offering service. Some names that spring to mind are caught.co.uk & dropsystem.co.uk run by members here, try searching google (with a UK search) for "drop catch" or "drop catching" and you'll also turn up a reasonable number offering a public service without having to go past the first few pages of results.

You have arrived at probably the best forum for .uk drop catch information, search, read and learn, there is so much information here you could almost build your own system without looking anywhere else for information :)

The T&C change explains it all....godaddy dropped them more or less then.

As for how much searching - As I said I am new to this...I am a marketer/ business owner, not a domainer. So thanks for your help!
