Oh, harro

Just picked this up; what are peoples' thoughts on this?

How hard would it be to rank for those keywords or 'free stuff'? Can decent money be made from these types of sites?

Thanks,

KJI

"Free" is a a difficult lead unless your tapping into another matched recognised keyword pairing, and even then you've got the work to do.

Your free+vague says nothing with .org.uk adding no-identity and is clutching at straws.
(a kind of give-me-your-wallet - even for the stupid)

Thanks for your opinion.

I deliberately kept it unspecific as I want to list a range of genuinely useful free things that visitors can take advantage of, for example, free software like OpenOffice.org and AVG, free games like GTA 1+2 along with free products offered by merchants using affiliate links. Would be a lot of work but would be a long term project and hopefully people would link to it.

Any other comments/suggestions?

If you are really going to put a lot of work into it then it might be worth getting a better name?

I'd value this one at £0 (or -£6 if you take into account the reg fee) and agree with Bailey's comments. Sorry!

Yep thats the specific of why it dosen't work.

The ask is for "free XXXXX" - good luck

Yes it can, there are established freebie sites that do well.

I would imagine you have to concentrate on building a mailing list.

Rgds

And consider it almost up and running at 20,000 members - lets get real

Ty - fair point about the name; I suppose I regged it because of the added SEO benefit but if I were to do it long term then the name wouldn't matter.

Instead of having mailing lists, couldn't you just add affiliate links straight onto the site to earn money? Anyone got a freebie type site and making money?

The freebie and free stuff market are quite saturated. Yes affiliate sales are possible but I used to run such a site with a 4k member base and thousands of uniques per month but aff sales were low (guess people only want free stuff!)

Adsense revenues were ok, it was popular so large number of clicks on average cpc did bring in a nice return. Domain was a .co.uk and brandable - I sold a while back now.

In my opinion you are going to find a new site difficult to rank without an exceptional usp and something completely different to the others that's going to get you talked about and seriously build up inbound links and 'noise' - not going to be easy.

If you did manage to get a freebie site to rank and were attracting visitors, and did bring in revenue although the search engines may not penalise you for your domain name prospective buyers would if you thought about reselling.

Branding potential is very poor so this is probably as good as any other .org.uk with the word free in it and less valuable than a random .co.uk with the word free in it

Don't think I'll bother now.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
