I am thinking of selling a few of my .co.uk domains and I wonder if anyone could compare and contrast selling via these two (apart from the obvious commission difference).

Many thanks,
Paul.

DL every day of the week.

One thing that makes me slightly wary of DL is that there is no way for me to tell bidders that I am VAT registered and that they will be getting a VAT invoice (if they want one).

Some bidders will be VAT registered and to them they will be bidding a VAT inclusive price but only paying the exclusive price, but the fact there is no way to communicate this to them can only have a downward effect on the price I eventually receive.

I have had the same issue as a bidder - because I don't know if the seller is VAT registered I don't know whether I will be paying the amount I bid or the amount I bid minus the VAT. If I knew I would be getting an invoice then I would bid more.

What about the exposure of the 2 sites - would the number of Sedo .co.uk bidders be comparable to DL do you think?

Sedo managed to get £5k at auction for network.co.uk

DL managed to get £5k at auction for homecover.co.uk

Plus do you want sedo to take 10%, take 10 days messing about with your cash or do you want to just get paid by the buyer directly??

Domainlore everytime from a sellers point of view and even a buyers point of view come to think of it.

Some auctions have a little note icon next to them, I'm sure if you contact Denys he'll confirm is this can be done.

I did email Denys putting the argument forward from a bidders pov - he wasn't keen, but was open to further discussion.

From a sellers pov, I can't see an option to add a note when I post an auction or see any auctions with note icons, but if that can be done that would solve the problem for me. I'll check with Denys and report back (since I understand he doesn't post on here now).

There is the same problem with VAT on sedo.

As for sedo vs domainlore; has to be DL for me, every day of the week

Sedo charge commission on VAT - search this forum for more info on the laughable situation.

Then check the dates of the 'we will use this feedback posts' then realise that Sedoh aint changing.

I am not saying DL is 100% perfect, however compare the two... DL is winner with ease.

You can actually see the VAT status of the seller on Sedo - its in the "Meet the seller" section on the auction page. Thats what I suggested to Denys - that he provide the same info.

Agree about the appalling Sedo commission calcs!

I've asked for that too - I appreciate the site, and think it's great - but surely business bidders would bid higher if they knew the sale was inclusive.

Can you check that for auctions as well?

Yes, tis there. Go to an auction page and scroll down to "Meet the seller", e.g.:

Meet the seller
Country of origin: United States
Value added Tax (VAT) status: Not Applicable
Sedo community member since: September 2005

Update on this - I got a reply back from Denys and he *is* implementing a facility to allow sellers to show their VAT status, so that is great.

Impressed by the quick feedback, so I'm definitely going to try selling a few names on there.

Paul.

I used (and sold) via Domainlore for the first time this week, an absolute piece of cake, whereas I have never sold on Sedo in years of trying. In fact, this thread could maybe be a 3-way discussion to include Acorn, which also comes up with the goods.

Where the VAT issue comes up, it's easy to see that Denys initial efforts have been to say to sellers that the price is always VAT inclusive to make things simpler, but if the buyer is VAT registered and the seller isn't, then no legitimate VAT invoice can be issued anyway. I don't see that as a major issue for now, given that the transaction ultimately doesn't involve Domainlore, which gives the parties involved a chance to iron those points out after sale.

Turn to Sedo on the other hand, and as they're invoicing for their own services, they still don't seem to have this clearly defined on the commission side, something which must be irritating to anyone wishing to dispute this point with them. When you consider that Domainlore is a one-man band, and Sedo is a global organisation, then Denys site punches well above its weight!

I see a "VAT registered?" section is now on each auction page

The two choices are "My prices are VAT inclusive" and "VAT is not applicable to me". However, there really needs to be a third choice: "VAT payable on asking price (if applicable)" since that depends very much on where the purchaser is and who they are (e.g. if they're outside the EU you don't charge them VAT even if you're VAT-registered . If they're EU based but outside the UK, it depends on whether they're an individual, a VAT-registered EU firm or a non-VAT registered EU firm. And so on...)

The final auction price is VAT inclusive if you're going to charge it.
