I'm looking for a reasonable/cheap :) hd camcorder. Must have some optical zoom and hopefully work well in low light.

I've seen a jvc for £100 but reviews say poor in low light.

I know you can spend fortunes on these to get the right results but I'm looking at doing it cheap as best I can.

So if anyone on here has any suggestions or links it will be appreciated as always.

If there are any experts I was wondering what resolution my old one recorded at. It recorded onto mini DVD's?

Thanks.

Your old camera would have recorded in PAL at a resolution of 720x576 and a 16:9 aspect ratio, I imagine.

Buy the best camera you can afford given your limited budget. Panasonic and Canon are both good makes. I've gone with Canon but a great many people go with Panasonic. Check reviews on reputatable web sites and also comments on AVforums.

Thanks invincible. Great answer.

I found a web site actually called avforums lol and it's jam packed with information on everything.

Thought with seeing so many cheap that prices had come down since I bought last two panasonics but still high xxx and some mouth watering ones costing 5k ouch.

Thanks again for the advice invincible. I followed a recommendation to a great one for what I need for under 200.

Followed a link about CMOS to a site called howstuffworks.com. Really good site.

I got a good deal on a Kodak for my youngest who's a budding Quentin Tarantino - some of the stuff he's done is great - my son that is...and Tarantino's not bad either.

If I can find it I'll let you know the model.

According to my subscription with Consumer.org.nz

For your price range a Sony HDR-CX190 is recommended.

Good points
Very good video quality and photo quality. Good audio quality and ease of use.

But
Poor versatility.

The lowdown
For less than NZ$500 the CX190 stands out as a decent basic HD camcorder. It doesn't have an onboard hard drive so you'll need to buy a good-sized memory card.

What model, just out of interest? I've been toying with the idea of getting one recently...

You could always go for a DSLR that does video and then all you need is a fast lens for low light which can be bought cheaply.

It's beyond your budget of £100 but something that would serve you well for a few years and shoots 1080P video.

Something like a Canon EOS 550D is a great piece of kit.
