We have BT infinity in our main office and I had a BT broadband business account at home on a second line to the main phone number.

Having seen how well Sky internet was working for our neighbours - far faster than we'd been able to get with BT - I decided to cancel the BT at home and just go for Sky on my home line which, incidentally is working really well.

On cancelling the line and Business broadband, both of which were out of contract period I was told there is a £25 termination charge for cancelling the broadband.

    How can this be justified?

Have you got emails/letters with terms and conditions from when you signed up?

Would I be correct in assuming that you cancelled the line to your home which had BT broadband for business on completely and took the one remaining line to your home over to Sky? If so here is an explanation of why BT have a broadband cease charge in that situation (here is the explanation specifically for business broadband).

FYI the charge isn't specific to BT Broadband. It's levied by BT Wholesale to all ISPs as per page 4 of 5 from this document.

Perhaps I'm being thick but I don't think that quite fits.

We had a business line which had business broadband on it too and a residential line which was just telephone only.

We cancelled the business line and the business broadband.

We moved the residential number to Sky for phone then added broadband.

The charge was levied against leaving business broadband - but we never moved that broadband elsewhere we eterminated all business services. It is BT that demarcates the difference between residential and business and will not let you regrade from business to residential.

This is exactly what I assumed you did.

By asking your service provider (BT Retail) to cease your line a cease charge was raised by BT Wholesale on the broadband element. That charge is £24.74 + VAT. If you had migrated the broadband to another business broadband service, using a MAC, the charge wouldn't have been raised.

I assume the business line was in the name of your company. Changing it to a residential line involves contracting with an individual rather than a business, is subject to different wholesale thus retail prices and T&Cs, so is obviously a new contract, hence a cease and reprovide.
