I'm a bit of a flop when it comes to databases but usually hack my way through it

Why would it be that when I run 2 idenical WP sites (same content everything) one runs like a dog on my server yet runs like a rocket on a fasthosts, internal, shared mysql db server?

Done rebooting, increased memory size, buffer pool size etc. Am wondering if need to increase number of max connections.

Server has 4 intel 2.7GHz Xeon processors, gig of ram (might be a bit to low) and about 70 other WP/.net projects on ot.

Stragely can't get a ping back from my server.. yet is live any help appreciated and favours WILL be returned ;)

How are the other 70 WP sites on your server behaving?
Is it just this one running slow?
Are both sites completely identical including ads, etc? (allowing for 3rd party connectivity probs causing slowdown)

The sites don't have ads, any complex plugins etc.

Some are very slow, others ok.

if I import this schema in into a FH shared mysql it runs like a rocket. i'm no DBA.. but I don'tthink its a hosting issue :(

Are you sure you dont simply need to ramp up your own server capabilities, especially ram-wise? Sorry to sound obvious but if quite a few sites are lagging and they're all on your own server, it could be just that.

Worth comparing the settings for mysql and the webserver as that's where the problem will likely to be, also the control panel may effect performance if it's a different one.

1GB RAM for 70 sites? Way too low.

On the low side but really depends on the set up - if php/mysql, especially opcode caching (XCache/eaccelerator), & WP caching. A stripped apache/php configuration with only required modules, and an optimised MySQL with the right querybuffer/key buffer settings are essential.

From memory fasthosts run fastcgi for the php which has good & bad points over sapi.

You mention .net projects on your server.... so must be windows servers running php?

This afternoon I upped the ram to 3GB. Looking at the usage in task manager, physical memory usage is at 25%, cpu less than 5%. I suppose theres some quite high traffic sites maybe 70 mysql dbs is quite alot -and I want to add another 50+!

anyway all very strange..

No, this particular server only provides mysql db's - the hosting is handled else where for sites.

update: I fixed this issue myself by installing mysql 5.5 - was using 5.1 32bit before

Got to say seems to be a massive difference in performance
