Hi,

In a bid to learn some basic development (have a play) and try to improve revenue on one or two domains I have parked I would appreciate your advice on the following.

1. Ideally I want to plug in a template which allows me to simply add content - would you say Wordpress is the best option?
2. 'Approx'. how much do you think this will cost for say one page?
3. What impact do you think this would have on my google ranking - minimal?
4. Any thoughts on hosting options to suit this basic level?

Thank you, any feedback appreciated.

Rigg.

If your site is going to be literally one page, you are better off using a standard HTML page, then you wont have all the code clutter that comes with wordpress.

Of course, if you want to continue adding pages, you may be better with wordpress. Its free and a lot of hosts now have autoinstallers to make installation even easier.

Hope that helps you.

thanks Aegean.

i know there is a lot of information on here but there is so much its putting your finger on exactly what you want

i feel I could do with two x one hour sessions with someone for starters so if anyone offers mentoring, send me a pm - its a lot easier face to face.

not looking for shortcuts as I understand its a time served business but I want to speed up the sponge stage

Just a couple of things to be aware of:

- ranking a 1-page site even using an Exact Match Domain has become very difficult with this year's Google changes
- if you monetise with Adsense you will most likely be skating on thin ice in terms of their terms and conditions.

Cheers
Stephen.

Understand Brassneck and its not something that really appeals to be honest.
Maybe further down the road if I have a name I want to develop then this would be an option.

I'm searching for what will work for me and that's why a brainstorm with someone is appealing. My background (sales & marketing) and interest points me to end user sales and finding opportunities in this buyers market.

I suppose I would like to trade, this being a mixture of long term holds and short term opportunities, just like I am doing in the markets (which is more complicated and less predictable).

If you don't know much already and don't want to put any effort into learning SEO or making a site I would shelve the idea now..

It's not just as simple as putting up a page and watching the money roll in, if only uh

If you want to play around with Wordpress I have a reseller hosting package you can forward a domain to - just drop me a PM

Respectfully that is not what I am saying Darren. Thanks bensd I will drop you a pm.

Rigg, if you also want to learn some HTML and some CSS, which are still the basis of web design, try using some free CSS templates:

http://www.freecsstemplates.org/

That way you can play around with the HTML, learn about divs and classes, plus play with the css to change the styling of your documents. If you're just starting out you can learn a lot just by fiddling with these on your local machine.

Well to answer more specifically.. you can use someone like tsohost, £3 a month and you can have upto 3 sites, 1 click wordpress install.

You can go to wordpress and download a free theme

http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/browse/popular/

And then you can edit that theme with a bit of css knowledge, maybe make a nice logo in photoshop or pay someone of fiverr to do it for $5.

You will also need to install stuff like an seo plugin, security plugins etc

If you can't be bothered to write the content for the site you can pay someone about $8 per 400 words on somewhere like textbroker com

You will need to lean a bit about SEO to optimize the site..

Then to actually get it ranking it will need some links to it, link building is a lot harder then it used to be.. spamming blogs and directories, articles will get you nowhere.. or if it does get you anywhere it will only be for a short amount of time.

So really the cost of making a site isn't too much, but the cost in time for you to learn all this is quite expensive..

Hope this helps.

Brilliant Darren, just what I was after - thanks.

That's the sort of info I am after....more....more.....more....:)

Id have to write out a massive post with too many specifics to go into more.

You have something to build on now hopefully.

lol i've removed the more more more - wasn't aimed at you.
tks again.

A while back, Matt Cutts made a vid recommending to people that they should put something on a site, even just a single page, so that Gargl would know what was to come. That's enough to put anybody off the idea ...

I put a couple of one-page sites up on "used" PR2 domains, they lost their PR inside a week and went so far down the SERPs that I had to pump air to them - and this was pre-Panda.

For used domains, I'm not putting any site up that has less than 5 pages, and I always add a couple more than the site had before it fell off the twig. At the moment, I'm hanging on to some of the previous "kudos" fairly consistently.

Recommended by Gargyl = don't do that!
