Hi all

I relise this has been asked before however the internets changing and googles changes may have opened/closed certain doors in the domain industry also i have some more direct questions.

Im looking at domaining from as long term money making business, id like to systemise the business making consistant profits if possible. 2 ways below id like to look into.....

Number 1.

Buying a Domain name in an area im passionate about such as property investment or travel, and developing a site to make money from.

My questions.......

Finding a suitable Domain! what do i look for domains with exsisting traffic that drop/expire? or does that not matter can i create traffic to the site?

Is it possible to generate £1000+ per month from a good website? if so how do i put adverts on there? what about membership sites i heard these are really good to do.

Number 2.

Trading Domain names

My questions

Iv sold 1 so i know it works but the work involved it wasnt really worth it unless i can sell for a higher amount.

So buying Domains with an end user in mind and been able to sell each Domain for £1000+ each is the plan but what advice can anyone offer me for doing this?

Iv bought some Domains that id like to try and sell but after contacting end users they havent responded even though the Domains were VERY good for their businesses, so do i offer out again and lower price? or move on but try and find a more luctrative nieche area?

Id apreciate anyones time repliying to this post

Thank you for looking!

I would say that Number 1 is more realistic for most people than Number 2, but it all depends where your strengths are. Websites certainly have the potential for income, but it all depends on how good the creator is. It used to be a lot easier to make money from websites, but now with the Google changes you really need to be able to attract an audience rather than rely on SEO, which many of us, myself included, find a lot harder.

Rgds

I think you're a cheeky munky coming in here and asking "how do you make money, I want to do it too", but I'll give you a hint.

Whatever you get that's worthwhile, put a site on it, don't park it.

And I'll tell you that $1000 per month from one site is very small change to a lot of people. Wish I was one of them.

Making money from Domains....

Thanks for the replies!

Ok looks like i have some reading to do!! thanks edwin

Iv outsourced website building to a contractor on elance and they built me 2 sites which im happy with these are for my other business (selling overseas property) so i guess i can outsource that work.

Regarding the level of income im looking to produce is enough for me at the moment id obviously want more but from a starting point of view i think its a good amount of money to start with (£1000 GBP per month)

Thanks again

If you really want to understand the market, then my advice would be Study the sales charts (and No that doesn't mean just read)

If you can learn to understand why something works/sells at a Gtld level. But, wouldn't have a cat-in-hells chance of working/selling as a CCTLD then your not necessarily on your way to making a fortune but your certainly on your way to avoiding expensive mistakes.

The trouble with "Acorn Threads" as a reference point is, interpretation. However, Working with historic and uptodate sales-data should open your eyes no end.

Work your way through Dnjournal.com sales (and recent historic) data - don't ignore the areas you think your not interested in, you'll be surprised how much you can gleam from the minor domain sales (.org/.info/.tv and even clever placement of irrelevant country code extensions) and getting your head around 'why the sale ?'

And of course bottom line if you can get pleasure out of doing "what some would call work" the money does turn-up

Hi

Some people say the best domain names were all taken in the 90s however if you can think of a great easy brand able name then you could be holding a domain worth £££

I have learnt by looking at news and new tech that could be used as a domain name and then brought them ASAP!

Hope it helps

But a Brand name is exactly that, a brand, therefore you have to turn it into a brand. What I mean is 10 years ago if I'd come on here saying I've just registered twitter.com/.co.uk whats it worth in the appraisals then I would have got hammered with reg fee replies......without content, an idea etc then a brand name means nothing......sorry to disagree, just thought it a valid point....

most decent domains have indeed been snapped up already but you can still find some if you dig deep enough.

There are good brand names that can still be 'contrived' registered and sold for good money, but indeed it does take time to find the odd-one available to register.

The comment above about 'Twitter' is valid to an extent but, nevertheless it has/holds it's relationship to it's subject matter (ie what it is being used for) And that is part of the secret of registering 'GOOD' brand-able domains

Obviously you want to be hunting down domains that hold an Association with the subject matter and equally important have a wide a field both in subject and monetary potential as possible. You must accept this only does apply to .com registrations - you'd be wasting your money trying this technique in .co.uk or indeed any other CC domain.

Don't ignore the 'Visual' aspect of the domain either. Businesses do like their domains to have clarity from a "once seen - not forgotten" perspective.
