I have been searching for a brand name for a client, for nearly 8 weeks now.

I can't tell you anything due to NDA about the project other than it's almost probably something with global potential and its not a product but a service.

So in the final analysis the dilemma is this based on the branding potential and the clients budget - 20k-30k - which is a fair whack to spend on a domain alone but what does one choose:

btw, The dream .com and .co.uk pair: totally out of range, nada, forget it :(

so after some research on the list is:

A. An exceptional one word .co.uk on own
B. An absolutely mega supreme one word .net, .info or .biz
C. A very good LLL.com which sort of fits the bill
D. Sack it all and take a trip over to the world of http://www.brandbucket.com

your thoughts appreciated.

I'd go for option C, something short and sweet and can still be branded.

Can you give us an idea of what the service is?

Yep, without knowing the 'Service-Sector' pretty impossible to get any help here at Acorn.

As for the .co.uk/.com pairing. Back in the days when the .coms were there to be had, it seemed even then, pretty wasteful to take the .co.uk (as a pair) unless it was a personal development project. More likely you'd pick-up the .net and even the .org. as a consolidating pair or trio

With the Budget your talking about I am surprised you can't nail down a suitable unused .com* and .co.uk though (as separate negotiations)

* Of course if your looking for 'one word' that's already recognisable/applicable in a particular Service-Sector as a .com then that was always going to be a struggle.

As for your optional choices as listed - I wouldn't take anything as an 'also-ran' domain.

However, I would always recommend a .com as an overall identity preference if it came down to one or the other (ie, no choice financially) even for a UK market

Doesn’t there remit research etc cover what they want? sounds as if there budget its just unrealistic..? co.uk won’t work globally
“mega supreme one word .net, .info or .biz” would mean the com or remaining tlds etc were gems to ? a potential monkey on your back that you’d always loose traffic to? ( may work a little more with a product)
Don’t like the idea of showing them ones through brandbucket etc they’ll just go there themselves next time? Also they may not use this time but remember it for future when your not involved?

Will they go nonsense made up words? Cant you find a mix abbreviation (or if the generic for service is short ) e.g. Phone Service “telserv” or misspelling “foneserv” etc

Sometimes you can pick up non english words same meaning (or not) in com that have global appeal, easy pronounceable e.g. aviva (Hebrew girls name.) at lower prices than English real word types? with the bonus that often the co.uk is not regged

agree with previous comments that it's difficult to give any definitive suggestion without more information....

However if you are considering a 'Brand Bucket' style made up name (not sure if you were joking?) you might as well save yourself some money and try and find one that's FTR.....Worth doing a search on expireddomains.net for recently expired 5 or 6 letter .com's - Often you will find some pronounceable made up words of the ilk that Brand Bucket sell for $xxxx

Think one word .com is ideally the way to go if poss though!

thanks all for your input. The criteria is that the domain must be one word, 5chrs. max.

Interesting thing is in this process is when your looking at hundreds of names you find some quite good ones along the way that are ftr or cheap.

Will let you know when I can.

These days an EMD does not bring the benefits it used to so go for a brandable / memorable name and spend the extra ££ on quality content creation, FB, Twitter, LinkedIn promotions.

Alan,

Just curious, what percentage of the time have you found this to be the case ? I've never looked in anger but have seen a few EMD's parked pages that rank result 1 page 1 on nothing but the domain and associated matching searches. The examples I've seen didn't even blip when Google made the algo change that purported to give all EMD's less weight.

Curious what other peoples experiences are too. Probably best I start a new thread and not hijack Julians ;-).
