Interestingly just a few days before it finished auction it was up for sale with a BIN of £149. Domaining is a funny game like that.

The world has gone mad!

Why do you think its gone mad mate?

If your main business is selling car floor mats i think this is an ideal domain and well worth the investment.

Yeh i tend to offer domains on acorn at a low price before listing on auction or contacting end users.

Just proves a domain is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it and in this case a Car Floor Mat business is willing to pay that for it and a domainer isn't.

And yet the singular is still FTR...

To me it's the word floor, it's redundant - what other type of car mats are there?

Well done on selling it though, the buyer chose to buy it and you got a good price.

Ask yourself, would you ever buy car mats on the Internet?

Quick straw poll in the office of approx 20 people says no, they wouldn't.

You drive a nice car you get them as part of the deal. You drive a regular car you buy them from the dealer or halfords. What you don't do is hit google looking for them.

I wouldn't reg this it were free.

I would and I have bought car mats from the internet.

The quick straw poll - would they not buy via the internet because they already had some mats, or because they had some kind of strange policy of refusing to get the best deal for their money?

Well actually I have just done some work for a car mat manufacturer in England who do sell online, I can assure you they sell tens of thousands of pounds worth of mats every week.

I love it! This is what makes the web such a disruptive force. If you didn't know, you might say "no way can one small easy to find product sell so much online" but it can and does - and that's repeated across thousands of "niche" products in all markets/industries.

So while you won't be the next household name, it is possible to make a good living out of selling a single relatively obscure "thing" as long as you execute the strategy well.

Thats right. An old boss of mine from years ago dominated the UK kitchen tap market for years online. I also have another customer who, amongst his other sites, make a lot of money selling accessories for ATV's, like heated handlebar muffs and rain covers. I have another client who sells switches and parts for switches. I didn't even realise there were so many different types of switches.

Its very difficult to compete with the big boys online, and I think thats a mistake a lot of inexperienced affiliate sites make, but sometimes if you can find a niche with good demand, it really can work well. Incidentally, the car mat people I mention above told me they have "4 major competitors in the UK", so it appears the online car mat business is bigger than I would have thought.
