Hi Folks,

There's a domain I'm interested in that expired nearly 2 years ago but it hasn't dropped. I contacted Nominet and they said it's in "special status", with no further explanation. I emailed them back to ask what that means and I've basically been told, "we can't tell you".

Anyone shed any light on it?

Thanks

Top secret information I'm afraid. Only those who are part of the executive Nominet club know about it.

Just terminology for a domain name that has been flagged as "do not cancel". Possibly some ongoing dispute or other situation. Without knowing the domain name I cannot comment further but Nominet clearly aren't going to say!

(from Note 3)

I inquired about a domain like this once

I was told it was a special circumstance, they couldn't give me details but the domain would not be dropped for the foreseeable future

It dropped about 2 hours after my call lol was caught by a well known catcher

Can't always trust what nominet say

That seems too much of a coincidence and I wonder if your inquiry prompted someone to look again before realising that the "DNC" should be removed. It seems quite likely it did!

Funny, I was told to keep an eye on the whois lol. Wonder if it's a "special message" ;-)

What kind of reason would there be for a domain not to drop after 14 months (it's not 2 years - that's when it was last updated)?

If it's a DRS it's the longest dispute I've heard about.

Cheers

Doesn't have to be a DRS dispute. Ownership dispute perhaps. Perhaps other legal action which has meant Nominet have flagged the domain name in this way.

I'm sure I saw one the other day that has been suspended since 2009. I can't off the top of my head think what it is though, will check later.

Weren't there some domains that were registered prior to Nominet being established, that were owned by people who did not consent to Nominet taking over them? I seem to remember visiting a website years ago in which I think someone was slagging off Nominet because he had registered domains for free for ever prior to Nominet and was opposed to Nominet 'stealing' them off him and forcing him to pay renewal fees. I wonder if Nominet have taken over all .co.uk domains now or whether any such pre-Nom domains might still exist and be some of the special cases.

All the prenoms were dropped or converted. If you can find a domain name without a registered on date line in the WHOIS, which indicated a prenom domain name, and excluding ones that have "before 1996" listed because those aren't prenoms any longer, let us know here.

birdcagelive.co.uk I've mentioned it a few times, there is one older than that, 2006, but its a nice name and I'm selfish :p

I was once interested in removalsdirect.co.uk which has been showing as "renewal required" since 2012. Checked again and it's still the same...Nominet were vague and noncommittal at the time about the reason though subsequently discovered it's owned by a member on here and there have been other threads about his names not dropping going back several years. Am assuming it must be a legal issue.

The reason for the instance you have exampled is possibly because the company listed as the registrar in the WHOIS is no longer a Nominet registrar. See the list.

Thanks Invincible, very odd situation.....wonder how long their domains will be in limbo for, seems like Nominet could have resolved the issue by now

Unfortunately I've no idea but I wouldn't imagine you'll get an answer out of either party given they're not really on speaking terms. One day something will just happen. :)
