Interesing post.

Lyrics.co.uk $80,000.00 PPC - that still makes me chuckle. What were they thinking?

Is it possible that the fees involved on making some of these sales look genuine, were covered by the publicity generated?

When it was sold it was making 50 euros a day parked if I remember correctly which works out at 4 years rev. paid. Doesn't seem so crazy to me??

@ firestars - yup, maybe though, some of the mentioned domains need more time for development or whatever they intend to do with them?
@FC Domains - Yes, I was thinking that myself, but that is a calculated risk, so how much publicity did (or do) they get for their money?

Agreed - shaun is a bloke who knows what hes doing.

I am not sure why there has the be doubt over big figures, perhaps some names are worth lots?! :)

I think the best point on there is about it showing that this market is currently (on the whole) domainer to domainer.

songwords.co.uk

or

lyrics.co.uk

Which is most likely to be visited by your target audience (teenage girl)

who's shaun?
whois says a bloke called Martyn owns it in Canada. Is it possible it sold again?
Also traffic is a nice thing but can be unpredicatable. imo a huge amount to spend on this domain, i know parking could recoup in a number of years but traffic can go walkies.
Pred :-D

Who would you say the target audience is?

Who would be searching for song words on the tinternet?

Teenage girls and divorced middle-aged women, thats my guess.

As far as I know the domain has decent ovt+ext. so the majority of traffic was/is type-in (archive.org confirms that there was never a site on it before it was caught) - if you've got a domain with good type-in traffic then you don't even need to consider target audiences if your aim is to just park the domain and let the money roll in.

Shaun is one of the business partners who bought it.

That is why the more generic a name the less that risk goes down.

On the flip side is that as internet penetration grows there is great numbers online, and there is greater generational use of the internet. There are kids out there today who dont know a world without talking to their mates on MSN etc.

Obviously the question is are domains going to be around in 10 - 20 years time :)

Who would you say the target audience is?

whoever types in the domain :)

I have banged in 'some words' +lyrics into google a few times. For the record I am not divorced nor a teenage girl. I am only a woman at weekends.

Either way in 4 years time they will have made their money back (and more possibly) and then own a domain worth something that also earns.

Having said that, here are the stats from the original sale:

Overture Stats
500 W/EXT | 151,522 WO/EXT (UK)
148 W/EXT | 2,050,260 WO/EXT (US)

Traffic Stats
600-800 UV's per day
45-55% CTR

UK OVT is now way lower than it was!

It is a bastard buying traffic domains.

It has happened like that to me before too.

There are some clever f*ckers that can manipulate the ov invisibly.

Successful traffic domain buyers have to be 100% savvy or the above.

PS: Rob, are you going to be man or woman for the Domain meet-up, I am tossing up whether to wear my triple-tit bra and eyelashes or just the polka dot skirt. Let me know.

i agree with most of that, especially the being a woman at weekends! lol
it is risky though as some traffic domains (not saying this one) can be manipulated & you have to be an expert when buying. which i'm not.
also it's not so much the question of will we have domains, as i can see no other option for the foreseeable future, but will parking be as we know it in 1 year?
there's big changes ahead & they are tightening up big time on tms & intellectual property, names etc
obviously this is a generic & is safe from that. i know the UK ppc industry is quite unique & offers high returns but can't help but feel this is one of those freak sales, where the people who bought it paid absolute top dollar.
in fact i can't help but feel they were the only ones who probably would.
i wish them the best , like you say they're no mugs i'm sure, so are earning an income. just hope it's as high now for them.
these sort of sales can only be good for the whole domain industry as a reseller anyway so long may it continue.

It is like that for most domains - there is a big list on here that admin posted a while back, if you compare the OV scores with now they have all dropped consistantly.

Not sure if I like the idea of you 'tossing up' while thinking of me as a women :) I think domainchannel ought to be fancy dress... hell of alot more fun :)

That is already happening , as I mentioned elsewhere DRS / Legal action etc is on the increase. It is only a matter of time before more and more TM'ed name domainers gets shafted legally on passing off - however that is the 'game' and they take the risks.

where the people who bought it paid absolute top dollar.

If the figures on everything, ie. traffic, earnings, price paid etc were a %age lower so the final price was say £20k or £10k but still based on the same multiples it would not look as shocking.

You either pay £5.75 , wangle a great deal or pay top whack for great names. With the limited supply drying up and people becoming more clued up on domain name values prices are heading one way.

If it is just traffic and revenue, there are some great deals still being sold on this board with alot less risk in that they are portfolio sales and much better multiples.

I think often if a buyer wants a domain as a generic leader in their industry, high traffic figures are really just an excuse. Many big sales are not on traffic.

yesterday

Finished tossing up, it gave me heads.
