    nominetnews.co.uk

    http://webwhois.nic.uk/cgi-bin/whois.cgi?query=nominetnews.co.uk

This domain is registered to Nominet but has no whois 'registration status' and has no renewal date. Is it registered under the standard Terms & Conditions of registration? If it is it should have a renewal date, and if it isn't it shouldn't exist.

    Any thoughts?

Jay D wrote elsewhere Nominet does not make a contract with Nominet so they are not typical registrations.

End of the day they run the database, so I suppose they could make their entries come with a picture of a banana if they wished :)

    Interesting debate.
As they're supposed to be running the uk zone on a totally equal basis to all, they should enjoy no special privilage by virtue of their position. Clearly they are at the moment.
They should register all such domains to a Nominet off shoot company which agrees to the T&Cs, then enter an agreement with that company to use the names. It as simple work around.
Otherwise, there is nothing to stop them registering some massively valuable words, and no one could challenge that, even if such words have absolutely nothing to do with their business.

They would be beyond the DRS. In fact, they clearly are already!

Let's not talk about offshoot companies, next they'll be dropcatching.

Just to be clear I am not fruitist, and would like other fruit not just bananas - I am an equal opportunities eater and would welcome anything from the wide fruit bowl of life to be displayed on the whois.
