You mean things can get worse than what they are now, your kidding surely :(

The solution to this is very simple - stick to the guidelines and avoid webspam :)

Then you can look forward to updates as your spammy competitors drop out of the rankings

I've given up learning about SEO. I just try add decent content to my sites that people will actually be interested in, and use social media a lot.

Really, if you're building an original and decent site, Google algorithm updates shouldn't worry you.

How do you propose to do that in areas that me and you operate that are generally hated for being exploitative... i.e. payday loans and gambling.

I'm profitable in 5 verticals, but ok, let's talk gambling. Was wondering when you'd use it against me. IMHO, the bottom of the ethical shitlist looks like this:

Gambling
Porn
Payday Loans
Escorts

As you can see I remain 2 full notches above you. Suck it :)

As for webspam, never have, never will. I have some reliable ways of ranking sites inside the Google guidelines, working on a few specific factors - nothing remotely dodgy.

I will share my methods with you for £25k in cash. It's unlikely you could work them out just from looking at my sites, my competitors haven't managed it. I think that's actually well worth it but I can't imagine you taking the risk...

Have you been drinking tonight ? :D

As for "Was wondering when you'd use it against me. " I just think the hypocrisy is staggering. Gambling addictions must have wrecked way more homes than payday loans could ever hope to. Payday loans are always just going to be last push - someone who's already made a complete mess of their finances may use a payday loan to tip themselves past the point of no return. They might also use it to turn things around. How many times do you think a gambler facing ruin has used a bet to turn their life around? Sure they might win that time... but that is certainly just delaying the inevitable.

Gambling is far more dangerous than payday loans will ever be. I'd respect someones opinion if they said "anyone working in gambling or payday loans is a scumbag, i wouldn't touch either myself". Your stance on it is basically that of a weasel.... its okay if you're making money from it but not if someone else is.

:)

Play back the tape. I never claimed to be some paragon of virtue. I criticized you for getting on your high horse about the ethics of the domainer business, which is easily more defensible than either of our businesses.

However, if you want to compare the two -

PDL is by its nature exploitative. Every single one of your customers is being exploited because they have no other option.

The vast majority of gamblers are not addicts. They get value out of the entertainment. They have the potential to win. They understand the potential to lose.

Equally, the vast majority of people in the pub are not alcoholics, and no-one blames the landlord for those who are - because alcohol enriches the lives of the majority who use it.

Loansharking on occasion may actually be the best alternative, but for the majority it is not.

Maybe people don't like bookies, but I reckon they prefer them to loansharks :)

Possibly the Penguin cometh next week!

Fingers crossed it hits yell, thompson and gumtree.

Sick of them constantly getting above my local service sites.

Interesting, I would have thought the bigger threat was Google's own localized results? They seem to be creeping into more and more niches.

NationalWidgets.co.uk will have a tough time if Google lists BrummieWidgets at #1 for anyone in Birmingham.

Google can argue that's what users want to see for some sectors I guess.

What I really don't like is the trend towards them offering their own comparison services at the top of results - there isn't enough space to show more than 3 fairly random products for shopping queries and IMHO they don't actually do comparison very well.

Obviously I'm biased but I think users are actually better served by specialist niche comparison sites - so if Google are really focused on the user they shouldn't be muscling in

problem is G's gota make some $$$ all those free gmail accounts and other services for bloggs end up costing big money..

I wouldn't worry about Google's cash flow tbh.

The moment I stopped caring about Google and solely focused on my sites and visitors the moment rankings went up.
