Hi All,

I'm having a site developed and one of the elements of it is a cron script that runs once each day to do updates, issue renewal emails, archieve data etc.

My hosting company has said that they will not allow this it to run, is this common? They have suggested getting the developers to right a CGI script instead.

I have no idea what cron is but am a little concerned that the site may not function properly know, so don't know whether its best to switch hosting company or get the developers to re write this.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd say change hosting provider.

Are they saying you can't use a php script as a cron job, but you can use a cgi? Can't see why they would do this.

If you want, PM me with the spec you need and I'll see what I can offer you ;)

Agreed. The ability to run cron jobs as the user (with only user permissions) is an essential part of the hosting package IMO. Most interfaces like cpanel allow this as default.

Change hosts. There's plenty around.
