Looking for free/ cheap web dev software to develop / edit simple websites. Need to have access to the underlying html.

Anyone use a package they would recommend?

Perhaps slightly different from what you're looking for, but Notepad++ is a much better text editor than Windows' built-in Notepad, if you want to make HTML pages from scratch (or even just to replace Notepad when you e.g. "view source" on websites)
.:: NOTEPAD++ ::.

visual studio express edition is free. useful for html, javascript etc. But on the dev side, it is asp.net/c# etc and not PHP.

webplus x2 or i think x3 is out now
if i can use it anyone can, its bloody brilliant!!!

KompoZer is a WYSIWYG free website editor - but starting with it is something of a challenge - OTOH there's a lot of help on the web.

Coffee Cup give out a free HTML editor.

Using both, you can get by for simple sites.

Coffee Cup is very good.

If anyone fancies cut price Adobe stuff, a £50 night course, gets you student prices via the college ;)

I use gVim with a custom theme. Kompozer is a wysiwig alternative.
