Still on the learning curve after 14 years

That was an interesting exercise for me tonight, just picking out about 50 .co.uk's and listing at what I thought were rock bottom prices for a few hours. The viewing figures are about what I expected for the for the posts given it was a Saturday evening. But I must admit I thought one or two would sell at the £30 - £40 everything was offered at.

I know they are mostly brandable type domains and more specialist areas. but each term I thought was at least recognisable for its audience and equally surprisingly an area where the .com market seems to be stable at sales figures that really appear fortunate for me in the past - and hopefully continue

I always consider myself on a learning curve even at my 50+ years and try to gleam as much info as I can about the nature of any of my sales in .com. And they do seem to go to website developers and end users in about equal measure.

I for one have always pointed out the difference between the two markets in appraisal requests - but it did make me realise just how extremely fundamentally different the two markets are. Perhaps far more than I imagined.

The other surprise is in revisiting my .co.uk drops, just how many, And I am taking an estimated guess of around 60% are captured on the day of the drop. Most of which I would consider at best on Par and probably in quite a few instances weaker (and they would have only ever been parked in their lifetime too)

No your not getting rid of me - I enjoy the crack here. But Again i'm still perplexed by the nature of the UK domain business. I appreciate some may say you just made it a one evening listing. But I don't see that as a fully explaining the dynamics of the co.uk mindset.

Disappointed, slightly that I had to borrow a few quid to pop out for a beer. and then found I wasn't really in the mood anyway. and I was itching to see if any takers before my midnight cut-off.

Feel free to make any comments - I know my insistence on paypal wouldn't have helped but who doesn't have an account there these days. Sure this reads more like a blog-post but like I say I am always keen to learn..
 
Now's not a good time to sell (or buy) .co.uk with direct.uk looming(?), however drop catchers will still take a punt at the £2.50 per annum buy in point.

If direct.uk happens the delete or not renew can still be called upon. Whereas if you have spent xx, xxx or x,xxx on one the loss threshold has been raised beyond acceptable.
 
I'd be more worried at the fact you had to borrow money to spend on "alcohol"
 
The market has stagnated from the top down and from the bottom up.


And the reason names are not selling for you is the members on here will try to catch them if and when they drop. There may even be groupes encouraging not to buy as to do so would inject funds into portfolios and so prop up prices.
A war of attrition.
Double edged though and this is a great time for builders of portfolios with a long term view.


It's 2002 all over again.
 
From a glance might of bought a couple off different lists, but don't consider it worth the time buying much less than 10 at a time or searching several lists with different individual prices to consider.

Basically spoilt for choice.

But ths situation will change massively when the .uk is sorted.
 
Did you try to sell any of those domains to end users?

I bought two domains on here for about £20 each (cant remember exactly without looking it up) in the past 3 months and then emailed potential end users and sold them, for £225 and £500.

Im still very much a 'newbie' so it could have been beginners luck, but just wanted to tell everyone its not all doom and gloom out there.

Dont give up just yet Bailey.
 
I too am perplexed by the UK domain market but as others have said it must be the direct .uk causing the current state it's in. At the moment the majority of sales are premiums, LLL's or emd's with high CPC and/or exacts are selling and even then not fetching the prices one would expect.
 
If I had money to spend then I would have bought 2 off you that I liked.

For me I look at it this way, buy one domain off a fellow trader for £40 + the transfer fee so £52 in total or register 8 ftr off my list for £53.60

The last one i bought from the reseller market cost £60 and I am glad I made the purchase, I won't post it publicly but will PM if you're curious.
 
Thanks for the responses guys, I really do appreciate it. fortunately I'm at the age now where even my bad or not so good decisions are appreciated for the insight that may come from them.

my mum would say I was just a late developer.

Boxerdog I really can't give you an insight to my priorities in life (particularly regarding money or alcohol) probably because I haven't have a clue myself. Surprisingly, I actually like to keep myself within certain cash constraints - it's one of the few self-inflicted controllers that I still have to adhere to. Trust me I can spend for Britain.

I'm still sitiing on my past wifes life policy payout (unclaimed) and Driving NatWest Bonkers, (plus some damn good and easly convertible .coms) but I'm the first to go off the rails when I get access to too much cash in one go. I've been there too many times. My bad habit also leaving things to the last minute to raise cash - there you go that's my minute in the Psychiatrists chair done for today

Anyway back to business - i'll have a look through my .coms to see what may appeal particularly to the UK market - and see if I can tempt one or two here on Acorn
