As separate businesses, would the linked membership curtail their individual dropcatching, if they promise not to collude with each other?

In reality I would guess that a couple of big Registrars outgun all the individual catchers combined.

 

I asked on the webinar about voting rights etc Nick was very clear it was per credit account rather than anything to do with voting rights.

So I would expect each major registrar brand to have a 90k account each

However that said they usually take public orders rather than backorders (as it is too hard to code / communicate this for a few days in July).

What you might see though is their reseller brands try to catch .uk names for example when Domain Monster caught all the good .wales

From the general vibe on this thread it seems like the release process is going to be a no go for most people. Shame, but it just doesn't seem viable to take part as it stands.

Like most members when they join Nominet I was given £500 in credit which is enough for 6 requests only.

When you increase the limit initially you are given £3000 which is not enough for 9 requests. I have an ACP tag in this situation and now I have to increase the credit to £4500 just to keep 9 requests.

For £45,000 in credit you require 10,000 domains at £3.75 + VAT (to get 60 requests).

For £90,000 in credit you require 20,000 domains at £3.75 + VAT (to get 150 requests).

Note: You can actually have that many names in your account with no intention of registering 1000-10,000 ROR domains. Nominet will freeze your credit for a month but you will still get more requests to use.

 

I'm as frustrating as everyone else no doubt, but this ultimately comes down to credit limits, and how the smaller guys try to compete with the big boys. If you can pony up the £90k funds required, you can play on a level playing field with the big boys. They should have just let members fund the number of domains they may want, but give everyone the same chance of catching; ultimately we all pay the same membership and reg fee.

It is clearly and blatantly to benefit the big players.
At the end of the day if someone wants to reg only 50 domains they will try their 50 and move on, this way more money gets you more chance and as previously pointed out why should some members have a higher chance than others.
They are acting worse than politicians with their 'heeds in the trough' or benefits for the boys

 

As they are running a separate EPP service for the drop they could give each member the same limits drop the lot in 1 go and have no impact to the live system (assuming the drop EPP was routed down different pipes to the live)

Are people really that fussed with .uk? Seems to me its a big flop anyway. iirc even flowers.uk only sold for £xxx and thats as premium a keyword as they come.

Maybe there is an argument for the creme de la creme, names like Insurance.uk, but how many of those will even be left come June?

 

I've had enquiries about catching so guess there is some interest.

 

.uk has had nearly 5 years to get into the public consciousness. Overall it hasn't. It has failed. I'm sure there's a few success stories here and there, but most of the general public still haven't got a clue about .uk and its been nearly 5 years. Most people will still nearly always ask "do you mean .co.uk or .org.uk?".

How many of you have even seen a .uk address in use as the primary site? How many have seen a TV advert or advertisement of .uk? Ever heard it advertised on the radio?

 

I have to agree with you. I had my .uk on my last van and the amount of people saying to me 'they have your website wrong' was unreal

 

.uk was one of the biggest strategic mistake done by Nominet. It increased our stock 100 percent with almost 0 per cent added value. It paved the way for price increase by Nominet. It diluted many TAG holders prime names.

I am LI talking to a guy with a new campaign LOFT. He was boosting the launch of LOFT uk and he was using .co.uk on the black van.

You even see the carnage when free .uk regs expired next year first half.

After all of these bullshit Nominet was and has been talking about price increase of GBP5.
