RIP...the big one!

So there I was...perusing the depth tabs of Domainlore (which has...ironically, featured in more forum discussions since promotion was stopped)...when I saw it.

The death of a big one.

For there sitting amongst the finery of 'hidden gems', sat the once proud, 'DVDPlayer.co.uk'.

Not even a dot UK, but the daddy himself....a fully fledged dot CO dot UK.

And I got to thinking.

How many domains did we purchase in past years, bathed in the warm feeling that this was indeed the big one. The big daddy. The motherf*cker of all motherf*cking big, small domains!

A guarantee of an incoming five; or maybe (whisper it)...a six figure score. "Honey, put the kids in the car, we're going to Centre Parcs this year!". Wahoo!!

Or...maybe this would be the one to develop, to get a piece of that venture capital mullah, the idea that would finally enable you to elbow your way onto the digital high street....and propel you to your first dropshipping million.

[They should have called that shit dripshopping in my experience.]

Anyhooo...I digress.

Today I witnessed the death of a big one.

There's one less star in the sky.

There's one less SUV on the M1.

A sad day indeed.

ps. Does annyone want to buy VHSPlayer.co.uk? It’s going cheap...

I bought a dvd player not long ago, maybe 3 months - I've got a couple of hundred films on DVD.

I'd replaced my TV (my pervious one had a built in dvd player) and thought I'll buy a cheap dvd player for when I want to watch an old film.

The fecking TV won't take a scart lead!

Theres a massive surge in vinyl at the mo. People are realising they love the tangible aesthetic of being able to hold something and read liner notes etc. The main issue for the label at mo is getting somewhere to press them. All the major plants have gone.

This morning, my wife was pissed off she could not watch the language DVD she just bought on her laptop(MS Surface). I had to bring out the DVD player from storage and plug it to the TV in the Kitchen(not that I want her stuck in the kitchen but I do love a good cooked meal

).

I asked her how many DVD have you bought, she said just this one and cant remember the last time she bought any other one. Me neither.

But Hope is a good thing and I hope one day, one day, DVD player will make a comeback just like Vinyl did, then I will cash in.

BlueRay just have to come in another colour, may be RedRay but as BlueRay? don't think so. (hiding question: Have I miss the drop for Bluerayplayers.com?)

It’s actually a great name, you’re just a victim of technological change on this occasion. That happens. I bet you were pretty excited when you got your hands on the domain. As we all have been about specific domains from time to time. What is DVDPlayer.co.uk’s back story?

I was happy to get it, I bought it to add to my Amazon sites, product name domains tend to do well, so was excited to get it and I never got round developing it. Couple of years later, I have moved on from Amazon sites hence selling the domain names.
I am sure I will have many more like this if I search my portfolio, I guess this will happen when you have few thousands of domain and guys with many more will probably read this post and says 'you are not alone mate'.

So no big plans for it, just Amazon site.

i hand regged floppy disks in 1999 with quite some hoorah at the time its been in my portfolio because frankly the renewal cost of domains was fairly low unfortunately
that has changed. Even though in the early days you had to get proper certificates
and pgp encrypted reg. quite telling that prices have gone up rather than down given that it was a manual process back then
answering machines also for the chop

I never had the gameboy, I was too focused on the cards lol. I remember going to school with both my pockets bulging out with pokemon cards
