Not the sort of thing I'd normally post, but I'm totally stumped for ideas on what to get my brother for his 40th.

Thoughts?

Remote control helicopter or drone

Racing/adventure type day

Gold or silver coin

Is he active or sedentary?

Would he prefer a "thing" or an "experience"?

Very roughly, what sort of ballpark budget are we talking about?

For my brothers 30th many years ago we took them away for a weekend. Thought that was a pretty decent idea, may do it for his 40th as well as it's coming up.

I also bought my parents a bottle of wine from the year they were married on a significant anniversary. If your bro likes wine he may get a kick out of a 40 year old bottle. There are sites you can buy them from without breaking the bank too much: https://www.vintagewinegifts.co.uk/acatalog/1977-40th-anniversary-gifts.html

Quality on the cheaper bottles isn't going to be that great as I imagine there's a massive mark up on older vintages, but a nice novelty to drink a wine as old as you are. Plus they can keep the bottle.

A guy I worked with, used to buy gold as presents for landmark birthdays, his little sisters 21st he got her 3 bars, 21g each, Silver, Gold and Platinum in a little case. His theory was, his family would always have a rainy day fallback, and well gold bars are cool. This were a while ago, the cost of gold probably prohibitive now.

A 40g bar of Gold is what £1,000, just an idea.

I don't follow gold, I remember seeing it a month or two ago at £26-27 a gram.

I'm not sure I wanna know how bad it is now :p

If you have any 40g bars for £1000 I will take them :p

Edit: £1388 for 40g on a few sites I checked, I knew I should have googled the price.

Trading same price as it was Jan 2016 and Jan 2015 about $1255 .. oh and Jan 2014 as well just looked back.

Well that is gold against the dollar (not gbp) - you can see it's in a range. Blue bar is current price - red arrows are now, Jan 2016, jan 2015. Anyway agree gold is a good gift wish I'd got that for my 40th instead of being taken to a strip bar and feeling rough for days with nothing permanent except an angry wife.

which are quite cool for any DC / Supes fans :)

My brother is a big cricket fan, couple years ago for his birthday I got him a silver coin which they made to celebrate the world cup, had a cricket ball design and was domed so it curved outwards, was pretty cool

I was given a chocolate making experience day, this was a lot of fun. Also had a driving experience, never enough laps of the track though!
