I recently launched www.leytonorient.co.uk as a fan site and thought i'd put a tongue in cheek campaign on the site to sign Ronaldo to the o's. I am taking paypal donations which I will donate to the club to buy something for the youth team or have a vote on the forum to see what fans suggest.
Anyway, I emailed the sun about it last night and asked if they'd like to write about it. Logon this morning and have had thousands of hits on the site!!! The story is on the sun site (dont think it is in the paper) it's on a spanish newspaper site sport.es and other spanish sites including the real madrid fan site. I have hits from west ham forums and loads more!! And... I have a Brazillian tv company wishing to do a piece on the story!!!!
It's all happening but I'm concerned if I've pissed the club off at all?
:???:

Ring them, your orient chairman is the friendliest of them all aint he? unless the set up has changed. I've done quite a few april fools and gimmicks but never on the scale you just have, well done. Sued? only by way of fraud, talk to the club immediately about where the money is going before they call the police.

First of all congratulations on your marketing success!

I've emailed the club saying about the campaign and asking for a contact to liaise with for when the campaign ends.

well done

no such thing as bad publicity? only worry when people stop talking about you! ...........all true.
seems like you are doing really well! nice site. a few tips there about emailing papers on stories etc. i may pinch!
. I see you have done nothing wrong & are being very honourable in helping the youth team. There is absolutely nothing that you are doing that is wrong. If you were ,paypal would be banned from knocking up donate buttons. 100 million customers can't be wrong! You say upfront too where the money is going. You legally don't even need to say 'when' you will hand it over. Haven't looked at site in detail. Maybe just state each time £1k is reached you will go down & give a cheque. Nice photo opp. for you & to meet players etc, publicity for club & site. Everyone wins! Cheers, Predator

great story. Not as though it would ever happen, so it's funny. If it benefits the club all the better.

Good idea. Get it sorted with the clubs PR people and they'll get the local rag there

amen

yeah, fair point Lee. they're probably sick at missing the domain. mind you he's doing a good job at raising the club's profile. what did you mean about chairmen though..........doug ellis, malcolm glazier etc oh, yeah! they're all c**ts
cheers, pred:shock:

It was their domain previously. I notice all the footy club sites are run by one company now. Dunno if they let it drop or if they've told the club yet?
Anyway thanks all, i'll keep you updated. Just off to brush up on my Brazilian for my tv debut!!

Bonjour :D

Yes PTV have run them for ages, if PTV are forgetting to renew it might be worthwhile watching them all.

fast show

all you need to learn is ................... athathathathatha Chris Waddle!

I don't think they run all the football club sites but certainly most of them. They also run a few of the county cricket sites.

I can't stand the PTV sites, you have to register to read anything! I hate it, in my opinion most clubs would be better off running their own sites because at the moment alot of fans prefer the unofficial sites.

Talking of football chairman, Palace have the one and only Simon Jordan, hes always mild mannered!

I would have thought that PTV would get a bit of the "hairdryer treatment" (to coin a footy phrase) from the club for letting the domain expire.

When I worked for an ISP sometimes we forgot to renew domains as we had a pretty old system with lots of flaws in it. When this happened we normally, as the ISP, had a duty to get the name back for our client. I do remember having to pay in excess of £1k to get one name back.

In our case we always had this "duty" as funnily enough our invoicing and debt chasing systems were much better and the client had aften paid for the renewal (they hadn't got) as well!

I'd be more worried about Leslie Grantham and the dwarfs coming round for FortBoyard.co.uk ;)

They are quite welcome to have it back for £10k and i'll throw in the site and paypal account :D and leslie can have fortboyard for a night with melinda messenger!!!:D

I'd just leave it. PTV are out of the same mould as the kinds of companies that get legal if you, for example, saw it fit to approach them.

They'll get wind of it if the club have already. If the club see it as important then you'll get a call if not you've had your 15mins of fame nonetheless ;-)
