Does anyone have any tips?

I'm fairly new to this game. I have a few IDNs and some .coms, not making any money out of those.

I decided to check out .co.uk's because they are predominantly English language, and a less saturated market than .coms. Of course, the earning potential is decreased also. Also, getting expired domains seems to be easier. Whereas trying to get in on the auction at snapnames or pool is difficult, and I'm not sure how much it costs, here it is more of a first come first served policy, and although I am not a TAG holder, I stand possibly a greater chance of getting a .co.uk though a public dropcatcher (I think you know who I am talking about here).

So, I have a few tools at my disposal now including a Keyword extractor, URL extractor and DNA, yet I am still having some trouble finding some decent domains.

I don't expect anyone to give away their unique strategy, but I would appreciate it if anyone could give me some good pointers or tips?

At the moment, the only domains that seem to be available are those of really obscure words which just don't seem to be worth buying.

I'm particularly interested to know how to go about finding and getting suspended names that have existing traffic. With my url extractor, I've tried to query the dmoz and yahoo directories, but it nevertheless still seems to be a fairly manual process of "tidying up" the URLs that I get from there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

You could try downloading dictionary (.txt) type files from the web, including all sorts of specific lists for famous people, place names, etc etc. then run them through DNA pro's template making section to combine all combination permutations then run the resultant list through the whois part.

Listen to the news, conversations, etc, and if an idea springs to mind for a potential name, write it down for later checking.

Why not go onto snapnames.com and download their expiring domain lists, remove all the .com/.net extensions with a simple find/replace in word-notepad, then feed that list in as well, with only .co.uk ext applied.

Hope this gives you some more ideas.

Dave on this subject .Lets say Ive got a whole list of .com
domains in both .txt and .dms. How would I change the .com
to .net so I can run .net through Pro and see whose registered the
.net ?. Any ideas ?.

Dave, thanks for the tips. Is there really traffic crossover from .com domains to co.uk domains? the other way round I could understand, but I did not expect much to cross over from .com to .co.uk

domaingenius, I advise you to get handy with Microsoft Excel. In particular, I often use the CONCATENATE function, to join together word strings.

Although, your case is even easier - you can use Notepad or Excel and go to Edit, Replace (Ctrl-H) and replace ".com" with ".net"

Beat me to it.....

open the .dms file in DNA and highlight reqd names/copy to clipboard, then do as Sooty sggested with the find/replace

The advice in this thread is halfway to building some good lists. With the increase in players over the past year, the lists need to be ever bigger and better to gain an edge.

All new entrants will start with dictionary scripts, the whole 3 character range, then combining words to form popular terms. There are several excellent and large sources of raw material to be mined, but whichever way you approach the task there are only a few traces of gold left among the tons of rock.

An important skill, is being able to recognise the ore that has value and extract it from the ballast. This is where it gets tricky, because there is so little information available on individual sale prices, and no proven method of marketing domains.

Thanks for the advice. I like those analogies.

Essentially we all have pickaxes and rocks before us, each of us has a different method of selecting a site for excavation, then panhandling for the gold!

because there is so little information available on individual sale prices

Totally agree but watch this space! We are developing DomainPrices.co.uk and will post any .co.uk domains sales we can get information on so this becomes a pricing reference site.

Would you all contribute your sales data to get it started?

We would just post the domain, date, sale price and "Sedo Sale" or "Private Sale".

Good idea?
