Bank smartphone app leads to dozens of customers getting ripped off

A number of Natwest customers who used the bank’s smartphone application to withdraw cash without a debit card are counting the cost after it became the target of fraudsters.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the criminals sent fake emails asking for details to a number of unsuspecting users which then allowed them to log-in and withdraw money using the ‘Get Cash’ phone app, which has now been suspended.

This case is the latest example of how increasing reliance on our mobile phones could be leaving us vulnerable. Recent research we’ve conducted shows that only 54% of people can correctly answer questions on smartphone and tablet security when put through a number of different scenarios.

Check your phone is running the latest version of the operating system.
Create a strong password (long but memorable) and make sure your screen lock is no longer than five minutes.
When downloading an app, check the author's web site and other users' comments and consider what data and services you're giving it access to.
