I've an EMD already in the co/uk flavour but eyeing up the .com version as i'd like to build an existing business around these 2, both a related to an existing business I run that i'd like to branch out of and source products directly myself to wholesale/retail etc

A little concerned with G's handling of EMD and the negative impact this may on getting these to rank etc as the co/uk has dropped out of sight :(

Thoughts?

there are no negatives to an EMD at all, only positives!

The difference now to few months ago is they have lost most of the edge on ranking easier, if you treat it like any other domain and seo properly it'll do just fine. They will still have the memorable name for customers, still get higher CTR's and still give you that extra look of the site knowing what it's doing.

e.g if you have domain pinkshoes /co/uk and just built links with anchor 'pink shoes' you'll get hit, same if you own 'rosesfootwear' and built only 'pink shoes' anchor text.

Is it a product based EMD? I have a few EMD sites at the top of Google, I dont think there will be a negative impact (as long as its not a long tail EMD), there may be no positive impact though.

Lots of sites are business branded with EMD's.

If you're going to be doing things properly, you wont have a problem. Like others have said, the sites that have been hit would be considered sites that don't provide what users want, if you're going to be establishing a business selling goods, I'm sure you'll benefit from the EMD. I think the only difference you'll see, is that it'll take a little longer to climb the rankings initially, but I think that may be a blessing in disguise, in that you'll take your time and build your SEO profile The Right Way™.

I'm building two businesses on EMD and the feedback from customers and other people in the business is only positive.

The Google problem is that generally anchor text was always built around the exact match - and that looks iffy.

Nice clean link profile and you can't go wrong!

Thanks Guys, appreciated

The links bit is traditionally where I've struggled tbh, always gone for the 'pink shoes' example

Usually there are good news about EMDs online because you actually are going to use the addresses that even when getting awarded with editorial links that usually have domain names as the anchor, your site will still benefit from the online votes. Just work constantly because EMDs, especially in competitive niches are not blessed by themselves and they still need lots of unique content plus authority links. One more thing, work on both your sites as if they were unique entities, and not just using duplicate scenarios.
