I'm having one of those days today with not one but two requests for me to "hand over" domains.

One is claiming trademark infringement as he has a trademark on a dictionary word in the class of chemicals; apparently my use of the name to sell domains means I should hand over the domain at the same price I paid Nominet.

The other one is one that I'm sure we've all had before:

was my domain for many years but an oversight meant I failed to reregister.

can I have my name back please? :)

Annoyingly I don't have any records of the previous registrant, domaintools is showing nothing either and waybackmachine has nothing for the last 6 years. Is there any other way to see historical whois info?

Oh and what's everyone's normal response to such requests? :D

Yes I'd gladly hand back domains names if Nominet would gladly hand my reg fee back for every name I registered that I didn't sell and had no value.

It's life, they didn't value it at the time. If it was a .com or soemething and went off and was sold on next day then maybe, but Nominet turn it off for 60+ days before cancelling it. Apart from someone dying, very little excuse in my opinion.

I couldn't write it here...

I've given a few back over the years if the story adds up and the person's not being a dick about it. As invincible said, Nominet are usually quite helpful in this situation.

Cheers everyone. I told him I'd need to check details and he's just come back with an email from his ISP (found in his spam folder) confirming his story.

So I've offered it back to him for a tenner cos I'm such a nice guy. LOL :D

It's simple in my book mate, imagine you didn't notice that your car wasn't on your drive for 60 days, then you see someone tidy it up, give it a polish, tune the engine up and driving down the street in it before deciding to report it to the Police.

Don't add up in my opinion, might sound harsh but that person probably works in the commercial sector themselves anddoes the same in there day job. I don't go into their office asking for freebies, they shouldn't come into mine.

...sometimes I wish this forum had one of those smilies lying on its back kicking its feet in the air and crying with laughter!

How do you steal domains? Please tell... ;)

I got one today saying I stole his domain, its still in his 123-reg account how come I have it.

I told him to take it up with 123-reg they clearly didn't renew it. Whats funny is I bought it off an acorn member about a year ago, and they had it for about a year (just renewed it) so its taken the guy 2 years + 99/92 days to realise he's not got the domain ?

Email or telephone Nominet, explain what you'd like to know and they might be forthcoming with some relevant information.

Don't waste your time ringing Nominet for the previous registrant info. They do not hand it over.

Your best bet for an old whois record is domaintools or asking members here.

I find hitting the "delete" key on those sorts of emails is very effective!

Me too:

I am still unclear as to how a domain name which is still in my name with Freeparking until 2011 has been released. I will get to the bottom of it.

He was quite polite and promised to get back to me, but that was 3 weeks ago. Told me the domain wasn't worth more than £10 to him.

Have to say I value it more than that - so if he really doesn't think it's worth more to him - he can't be missing it much.
