Hi All

If your advising someone on a UK site set up, is it advisable for them to buy as many extensions as they can afford as well as a .co.uk. So they would be well advised to get the

.com
.net
.info

for example.

Do you think its important to do this. If so why and if not so why? Can a .co.uk only site do well in the short term and long term with out the other extensions?

Thanks

James

For me if the .com and .co.uk are free I'd buy them both.

Unless the site is one that I plan on throwing away after a few months or a year.

I wouldn't buy the net, org or info to back up a .co.uk project

But if I find a nice .info available I might buy it if .com etc is taken, for a future project, because I think .infos could do really well in future.

Without knowing much about the project concerned, it's important if you are trying to build a brand and relying on brand recognition as part of your business plan. I would buy the .co.uk and .com as a minimum, others if you are trying to build a brand and budget allows.

Yes it can, but I would still buy the .com anyway.

And if you go for a .com and your target is a uk audience make sure you go for a uk host.

But if you just have the .co.uk but host it overseas, then you won't be punished by Google if you're not hosting in the UK

It's just if your site is .com and UK focused then it's much better to have it hosted in The UK

(that's right isn't it hammer?)

Just to add to this as I was going to start a new thread but this does seem on the same sort of lines.

Domain ext rating, what order and value do they have?
Can we all create a bench mark for a domain/s.

e.g. below (not a true order or amount just to give a better idea of what i'm trying to achieve.)

Domain = CoffeeShop

  1. .com = £500
  2. .co.uk = £400
  3. .net = £300
  4. .org = £200
  5. .info = £100
  6. .org.uk = £75
  7. .me.uk = £10

Reason is, I have a domain to reg but .co.uk and .com have gone and wonder how less or more the .net is worth.
