Do drop catching services (such as dropsystem, caught and dropcatcher) stand a chance against independent domainers (like Admin, GoldFrog etc) trying to catch the same name?

also which service is the best one in peoples opinions?

Thanks,
Chris

Some of it is chance,

Chris (caught.co.uk) caught one for me last week that a good catcher also went for on my behalf and Chris caught it. The other catcher has caught some top names before, but Chris's system got it for me.

Not used Dale's so couldn't comment on his.

But yes it can happen

Yes they do, I had 2 catchers, and 4 public facing catchers going for one and Dale (DropSys got it), another time I had 1 catcher, 4 public facing and Chris caught it. Also had others where I've had 4 public catchers and been told by private catchers it was on their lists and one of the public catchers caught it.

I'm unconvinced any of the public catchers have a chance on LLLs, or top prime single world generics, as too much attention on them.

If like ecommerce was dropping along with a few other names then all the private catchers will go for the top prime first meaning the others have a better chance for public catchers, you gotta play the odds :)

It also depends what time in the day the name drops.

The later the name drops the more chance a public catcher will have to catch it as they will be monitoring less names.

A public catcher will always have a chance at catching a name though so always worth using them.

vriginmobile.co.uk just went to caught so the answer is yes.
Why on earth would anyone want to register it in the first place... but virgnimobile.co.uk virginmobils.co.uk are available free……?

I'm not explaining, all you do is rant and apologise after for being a twit. It was an example, people can take it or leave it, I suggest you leave it.

What on earth are you on about….? "I'm not explaining" what a cop out, I have not ranted on here (unlike yourself) subsequently have never found the need to apologise... Get your facts right before you cast aspersions...
I suggest you leave it.
ooooooh

In answer to the posters question if I wanted a domain enough you can always try booking at more than one company but personally have found larger ones to be more successful although there are some good smaller ones a lot of them may also be chasing the better ones for themselves

In order

1: Caught.co.uk
2: Caught.co.uk
3: Caught.co.uk

ermm not tried anybody else i tend to catch 90% of what i want through caught..

If i am honest i would rather no body booked with caught so I can get even more names than i am doing now :)

Ive had a good success rate with Chris, not so with Dale thus far although I will continue to use both going forward.

Firestars -- let me know the email address you have used to book with us and I'll check it out. Will let you know via the email address you used. Not here.

Caught No.1 for bookings to success ratio.

DropSystem (retail) success rate has tanked of late.

DropCatcher couldn't catch a cold. Don't waste your money on any pre-purchased credits.

I have a tag, membership and script which is sitting idle. If anyone can code and wants to team up drop me a pm. Although may not be worthwhile if nominet go ahead with their stupid plans.

Both Caught.co.uk and DropSystem.co.uk do pretty well for me. DropCatcher have kind of cooled recently, but they've got a ton of goodwill stored up in my book from the fantastic success they had a couple of years back...

I wrote this off the cuff and should really have quantified it with figures.

I have had a good success rate with Chris +/-50 catches, but none so far with Dale, however, I have only tried 4 times, so my statement was a little misleading.

As before, for someone looking for a catch, I would book with both as soon as you are aware of it becoming available.

DropSystem.co.uk have caught 110 domains for me so far. They've missed 390 domains. It's just a coincidence that the two numbers happen to add up to a nice round 500, but that makes the math pretty easy - that's a 22% success rate for the domains I've booked with them. I'd class that as excellent, since I'm pretty choosy about what I book...

Thank you Edwin. From you that's praise indeed; and yes, you are very choosy ;) . Thanks also to Firestars for the clarification.

Talking about drop catching...

Can anyone shed some light on how much they are charging?

In my experience avoid Name Warden, they are by far the worst drop catcher I have used even though they are quite "big".
