Domain catching script?

What would the second best option to a domain catching script be without having to be a registrar with nominet, if any? I appreciate there wouldn't be any chance of catching the sought after domains using any other method - but for some of the less sought after domains would there be any advantage, such as an api of some kind? (other than over the people trying to hand register). I was thinking this could be used in combination with public catchers, as the private script could be run selectively in the window period in the hope it would give a slight advantage.

Your thoughts and advise would be greatly appreciated!

You could knock up a script that sends an email to heart internets domain robot once a domain is available:

The issue you have is that you won't have DAC accesss so you'll be limited to checking the normal whois which is limited to 1000 lookups per 24 hours per IP address so you'd have pretty much no chance of beating public catchers.

Realistically if you want to catch the best names (or at least have a better chance) then you'll need to be a registrar with Nominet and rent/create your own script.

Without a full Nominet membership the most definitely bookings names with public catchers, and private catchers where available. (As skinner pointed out).

Script rental is anything from £150 to £400 a month depending who you use.

RobM's deal is £10 per catch (+£6 reg fee to nom) and £15 a month for his drop lists, which is a fairly good deal.

Idd sounds like a good deal, signed up for trial and will go full suscription asap but there is a waiting list for dc.

@ Scott, what's Idd? What's dc where there's a waiting list? I cant see anything above relating to those.

Have you already got your Nominet registrar TAG and DAC/EPP access?

I assume DC is drop catching Kev the idd I don't know.

You'll def need to shell out in the region of £600 for Nominet Membership, Yearly Fee and Dac access to use any drop catching script. Getting a Tag is free tho, but not really much use without the rest.

Jesus christ is this a rich mans game or what. Was a gamer on and off for 7 years idd was indeed dc= drop catch.

Ahh, I thought it was a service Scott had found called DC.

I still don't know what the IDD thing is though.

It's not very expensive to get started in the grand scheme of things, £600 Nominet registrar fee to get your TAG, I think it's about £30 for DAC access and £100 a year membership fee, plus a fee each year to renew your DAC access. Getting set up in the first instance costs around £800 including VAT, but then you only have the yearly fee's after that which is easily covered from catches.

You have to remember that having a tag and membership was intended for a business like Domain Monster or Daily to provide domains for customers, so the money is reflective of A. weeding out chancers and b, just to rinse some money.

As for drop catch tools costing up to £400, you gotta think one domain like Greywings Leaflets catch can pay that easy in 1 go.

Will having a tag get you that golden name ? possibly, but there is no guarantee, so you could end up paying £400 a month for a catch tool, ontop of the £600 nom cost (which after the first year costs around £150 a year to nominet) and end up with a bag of silver and no gold.

Before you go for your own setup, sign up to Robs drop lists, leap 7-10 days forward, and book quality names with public catchers and the private catchers which allow it.

£40 a roll, if you only book the best, it may take some time but you can turn you £40 catch into a lot more. The public catchers (and private catchers who catch for others) do get lucky sometimes :)

Have you tried to book anything at a public catch lately? :p

There are people booking names upto 60 days ahead as soon as they become suspended (including me obviously to notice ;) )

I've had people complain that they can't book in the "renewal required" period before!
