I'm 3 years down the line and i've never had any beginners luck. Having a tag is great. But don't recon on it guaranteeing you anything, because it doesn't. Work out the numbers in a business fashion, buy the best you can and don't get too stressed with it.

^ The vast majority of valuable/useful domains caught are caught by Nominet members/tag holders. You may not have had much success as an individual, but collectively, you need the benefit of passing the 1000/day lookups to stand any chance of catching such domain names.

Don't be surprised if this is identified as something the company needs to address in the current governance review either!

nominet had incidentally have some difficulties with its drop system and a lot of valuable domains did not drop as they supposed to drop yesterday. No problem, every organization has a right to screw a system which had screwed many times in previous week. We can deal with it.
