Last year I set up a website about reducing petrol use, the site is Save-Petrol.co.uk. In Feb a reporter for Canadas largest newspaper contacted me for a chat about Europeans reducing fuel consumption, the article was recently printed in their motoring section.

I presume .co.uk's generally rank lower than .coms in US/Canada because of relevance and geo targetting but he still found the site via a SE. Shows how far the website can reach and that .CO.UK's can overcome some geotargetting.

Excerpt from the article:

Chris Satchwell, founder of Save-Petrol.co.uk, an online fuel conservation advocacy group, says that's not true any more, and that "aside from being a little bit louder," there are no real perceptible differences between gas and diesel cars any more from behind the wheel. While the option of a diesel car may not enter many Canadians' minds, "for the majority of Brits it is a complete no-brainer," according to Satchwell.

Nice free bit of promotion for my site! :D

Nice article & press,

.co.uk's do not naturally rank any lower than .com's, from an SEO perspective I would be happy to use either - more so getting links from good sources outside the UK will help you further still when ranking for somthing like 'save petrol' in Google.com, which you are currently 3rd in.

Oh, i was under the impression that .coms would be given slight preference simply because of geotargetting, and in the uk it would be the other way round. I probably read some shitty SEO advice a while back! :(

I think it was 7th before the article so I'm reckoning the trusted link has helped quite a bit. :D

Wow, looks like the site has got press on our home shores as well! It was mentioned in the Times on Thursday in an article called 'Budget Survival Kit' after Darlings fun fun fun budget!

Im looking for a copy of the newspaper for the article btw, if anyone has it could you contact me.

Thanks, Satch.

.co.uk as compared to .com

There are many other factors that determine the reach and success of a website. Posting on a relevant forum with a link to your website is just such an example of enhancing your SEO by other means. You've obviously got the right idea!

Reducing petrol use

On the subject of vehicles and the reduction of use of petrol, i've heard that hydrogen fuel cells will offer the most promising alternative to petrol in the medium to long term..causing no pollution whatsoever when in use. I've heard they won't be widely available in vehicles for the next 5 years or so though. Have you heard much about their development?

TBH i dont know a great deal about powering cars via alternative energies. My dad is a part of a senior management team at a car company (wont name the company) and he said they are currently developing alternative energies, in relation to selling hydrogen fuel cells to the mass market they are worried about making the actual cell safe (IE if the fuel cell blew up because of a mechanical problem), and I think a lot of scientists are still sceptical, if every car was powered by hydrogen and one blew up, all the cars around could aswell creating in effect a hydrogen bomb which could be seriously bad news if it was in a built up area! (or anywhere for that matter) :(

The big car companies have deep pockets and there are a few different options (even cooking oil can be done) to power cars by alternative sources, so I think we will have to wait and see.
