Thanks Edwin as always for your helpful summary.

I find myself now using Nominet Whois tool, if I want a quick check on a single domain;

http://www.nominet.org.uk/uk-domain-names/about-domain-names/domain-lookup-whois/whois-tool

and search for requiredname.uk to find out who has the .uk rights.
