Very pleased to be accepted for membership of the forum. Thank you.

I am here to learn! Many years ago, in the late 1980s I think, and with very little knowledge, I purchased some domains that were associated with my profession. Since then they have been dormant but I have added a few, and having recently retired I am wondering whether to let them lapse or sell them, or whether it might be fun to buy a few more and build up a larger portfolio. I am not really sure why I would want to do that apart from feeling some attachment to the ones I already have!

Anyway, I'm sure I will enjoy learning about the wonderful (and very complicated as far as I can see) world of domain names!

Welcome & Enjoy

Would be interested to know some of these domains you got in the 80s.

Would you mind sharing them? or maybe just your best and worst.

Cheers

Hi Murray and thank you.

I doubt that my domains will be of much interest to people in a different field - psychoanalysis is a rather minority interest - but here is the list. I've included the non '.uk' ones too. I hope that is ok. I'm afraid I can't remember which ones I bought early on and which I added later. Do you think they might be sellable?

analyst.org.uk
analytic.org.uk
psyche.org.uk
psychoanalysis.co.uk
psychoanalyst.org.uk
psychoanalytic.co.uk
psychoanalytic.org.uk
psychoanalytical.co.uk
psychoanalytical.org.uk
psychoanalytic.org
psychoanalytical.eu
psychoanalytical.info
psychoanalytical.net
psychoanalytical.org

I have a few other '.uk' ones that I use for e-mail, the best of which is probably sofia.org.uk, which I bought when my daughter (called Sofia would you believe!) was born. She doesn't really use it because young people seem to communicate through social media sites rather than e-mail. I guess that might be worth something to someone?

Anyway, thank you for your interest!

Welcome to Acorn Domains! ;)

It's exciting that you owned some of the world's first domains!

sofia.org.uk is a good one!

Welcome. Looks like you bought those around 1999-2001 which makes a lot more sense than in the 1980s (though web time passes so quickly it may seem that long ago in "internet years")

As you say, those are some extremely "niche" domains, but maybe the folks at http://www.psychoanalysis.org.uk/ could help point you in the direction of a potential buyer or buyers? (You'd probably want to narrow down the list to just the top 2-3 domains because the others detract from the proposition).

*chooses to ignore Edwin's opening paragraph*

It's funny to think just how long 123-Reg have been around isn't it! These date back to before Wikipedia! That's almost unimaginable.

Yes, Sofia.org.uk is a good one. I can think of at least two domain holders who own similar domains but might want that one in the future.

Mind, one of the troubles with first name domains for email is what you put before the @ - mail@ seems so impersonal.

Psyche caught my eye, but sadly that's one of the later registrations.

Anyway. Welcome! There's quite a lot to take in. I don't think there are many psychology sector end users here (who would be the end users of domains that is - there's probably a few people who it would be fascinating to psychoanalyse) but someone may see some interest.

Think of most people here being like antique dealers (although obviously nothing dates back further than the 80s). We'll sell between themselves, buy and sell at auction, buy and sell in their own stores, buy on behalf of clients and keep a few things for ourselves.

As the forums are free-form, however, it's one of the easier places to sell a batch of domains (such as your psychoanalytical set). Other auction places such as DomainLore.com only let you sell one name in a "lot", so they're best for the single names.

Thanks everyone.

Actually Edwin psychoanalysis.co.uk belongs to my Institute (Institute of Psychoanalysis). I don't think I'll have much luck there as most of them know less than I do! I was one of the people that dragged (and dragged is putting it mildly!) the IPsA into the modern world and set up their first very amateurish website and later transferred that domain over to them under Pipex. It was definitely well before 1999 that I got the first batch of domains because I was working on the IPsA website in the early or mid 90s and I had them by then. It could have been around that time that I transferred the hosting to 123-reg from UK2.net though, I really can't remember for sure.

The idea of splitting them is a good one Edwin. For example the word psychoanalytical is mainly used outside the UK while the Brits use psychoanalytic.

Paul, you are right that psyche.org.uk was one of the later ones, as is sofia.org.uk. My daughter was born in 1999 so I will have got that one in the time frame that Edwin refers to. Incidentally she used [email protected] on the few occasions that she has made use of it. Thanks for your advice about how buying and selling works and for the links. I will take a look at the ones that you mention.

I have a lot to learn and it has already started!

Take care.

I think you're mixing psychoanalysis.org.uk (which has a 1997 registration date and belongs to the institute) and psychoanalysis.co.uk (which has a 1999 registration date and belongs to you)
