How did that happen so fast

I made a single page for a domain late last night using my usual template, the domain had previously been parked, but hadn't been indexed as far as I'm aware, I couldn't find it in searches anyway, I checked it this morning and it's number one on Google UK (pages from the UK) for the term "spyware blockers", and on page 4 for "the web":

How did that go to number 1 so fast since last night?

The term "spyware blockers" got 301,000 exact searches last month and 450,000 monthly for the last 12 months. I have put an Amazon store on the site, but would like ideas on how best to monetise it, as I don't have much luck with Amazon, hopefully I'll get some Adsense clicks as the average cpc is supposedly around £7 according to the Google keyword tool.

If you click pages from the UK
Results 1 - 10 of about 18,900 for spyware blockers.

That's why, nobody click pages from the UK only as Google.co.uk does a decent job of doing that for you, getting it to rank no.1 on Google.co.uk is a whole different game. It's a good start but I don't think you'll much traffic from it, let us know.

What are you basing this on, opinion? Plenty use this option. Traffic volumes are of course lower, but still appreciable. The traffic speaks for itself. From my own experience, I find the geo option often delivers better UK-relevant results.

Cheers Scott,

Oh well, as you say, it's a start anyway, better to be top than nowhere I suppose :D

nobody click pages from the UK only

I do, I always check both the web and uk pages when looking for anything, I'm sure some others do as well, happy enough with it being on page 4 on "the web" at this point, I'll try and get it higher by adding more content when I get round to it.

If you can report back tomorrow with some stats so we get some numbers to compare.

'We' are not your average searcher, I would suggest that your average Googler would not use the UK only option, neither would they search with quotes and other features we use without a second thought but being page 4 is a great start - there is also the danger of the freshness filter.

How can you detect who choose .co.uk Only and who just choose all the web ? I can only see you could do this by logging the whole referer not just using stat software ?

I have never really thought about checking this :)

p.s. Leb, depends how many results per page you have, and if you have personalised results turned on. I have 100 results per page and keep turning personalised results off but it keeps coming back on.

Personalised Results: https://www.google.com/accounts/Ser....google.com/history/&nui=1&service=hist&srr=1

You can see what position you were at when clicked in the stats from Webmaster Tools

@ Ben, it's still on page 4 for me, I'm using Opera browser, and I know different browsers gives different results, you using FireFox or IE?

Systreg - why have you got loads of those outbound links down the left hand side of spywareblockers?

#40 for me

That shows a position but it doesnt define when the '&meta=cr%3DcountryUK%7CcountryGB' was used to define pages from the UK only ?

True but if Systreg had 100 visits in the next week and from Webmaster tools it said he had 30 clicks at position 1 you could surmise that 30% must have clicked UK only.

Scott is of course correct regarding google search behaviour of a typical or average user. It is fair to say that the majority aren't aware of the more advanced search options, even with options like the "pages from the UK" radio button being so apparent. Our own traffic figures can provide some insight into general user behaviour. Users are increasingly becoming more savvy with their use of Google however. My only point was that this option is used, albeit substantially less than the default web option. I see plenty of traffic through this geo filter, so hopefully your top rank will generate some healthy traffic. Clearly, it all depends on the popularity of your search terms.

@ Dragon, they are there for general information purposes, as the site is for spyware, which is associated with scams, I like to keep scam links on my pages to make people aware of various types of online fraud, I have those on all of my fraud related sites.

Fair enough :) I'd make them nofollow myself and maybe even images, unless you have link exchanges in place of course!

I'm going to download the raw logs from my busiest site in DEC, and I'll knock up a script to count the occurances of google and the meta tag that specified UK Only.

I could grep it but my grep skills kinda suck :p

Will possibly when I get back from this call out, as I got an appointment at 4pm.

Looks like I've earnt my first Adsense revenue from the spyware site, I have never got as much as that for one single click ever, so it must be from the new site with it's fairly high cpc
