AAAAAHHHHHHH

I'm trying to do a fresh install of XP home on an oldish PC (2 years old) that was previously running win 98. The install gets to the point where it is copying files over from the CD to the harddrive, reaches about 10% then stalls and just hangs there.

It doesn't stall on any particular file and can stall anywhere between 8% and 11%.

I have tried reinstalling win 98 and it works fine. Does anyone have any idea what the cause might be, googling found someone with a similar problem but unfortunately there was no solution posted:

Any help greatly appreciated,

Grant

Also, I've tried formatting the drive in NTFS and FAT32, makes no difference!

I've only ever known this happen if/when there's a problem with the PC hardware, especially with the PC's memory.

But if it works with W98 and is stable (is it?) then it's unlikely to be the memory.

Yep, its been pretty stable for the past couple of years...What I thought would be a couple of hours maximum has turned into an all day stress marathon and I'm still where I was when I started :(

have you tried a different CD rom? could be the cdrom you got cannot read parts of the cd its on

Hi Paul, I thought about that but then I remembered I used the same CD to install XP on my other PC about a month ago. Could be worth a try tho.

PS. got the forms, thank mate

thats good, let me know if any prbs.

is the cd rom on the pc your doing it on a master or slave? make the cdrom master on the secondry connection in the pc, you never know.

another thing, re copy the xp cd onto a different cd

This was something I was looking at doing, is this set physically on the cdrom or can it be changed in the BIOS?

Did you say you had another computer?

if so just whip out the h/d from that one plonk in the other drive. install xp on that computer then plonk that drive into your win98 pc. You might need to locate some drivers that where not detected but otherwise should be ok.

back of cdrom there is a jumper master / slave / cable select. put the jumper on slave and on the connection on the motherboard slot it in the secondry. and have your hard drive set as master and in the primary connection.

Thanks for the advice chaps, time for some wine I think.....

Had similar problems in the past loading XP, turned out to be faulty memory in 2 PC's and faulty CD drive in another.

If the PC has multiple memory modules try removing 1 and try XP install again.

Paul, I cant thank you enough - did as you suggested with the cdrom and it installed first time.

I owe you one mate.

:) good, did you make HD master, CD slave etc....

It has 2 cdroms in it, just made the one I was using the master and unplugged the other one.

Cheers, Grant
