Howdy all

I've got something nasty .... i'm infected!

And I've not visited any dodgy sites!!!

I sometimes get redirected after clicking on a search result using google in firefox and IE. Seems to target financial and webhosting sites.

So far i've tried .....

Mcafee
Spybot S&D
Malwarebytes (that found 3 files and deleted them, but still having the same prob)
Microsoft Malware Removal

..... and still no joy.

Can anybody recommend some uber malware removal tools/software?

Thanks all

Malwarebytes is probs your best bet, so if that's not doing the job you are looking at an OS re-install.
You can also try http://www.tweaknow.com/
The tweaknow powerpack is quite a powerful tool.

You could try System Restore if it's a recent problem.

Thanks for the replies. Appreciated :)

Trying tweaknow .... now, and if no joy .... system restore it is!

Do you know what it is yet?
Try the panda and/or kaspersky online scanner.
Or local AV in safe mode.
Have you checked your hosts file?

It's not an ISP lander for a 404 is it? Do the pages that you're trying to reach exist? Try going to jshkshkjhskjsooiueooei.com and see if the same thing happens.

Friday night i connected to the internet as normal, but this time something installed on my bottom right hand side task bar, it was trying to replicate windows pc issuses.

I wouldnt let me uninstall anything, or run any anti virus programmes as it turned everything of, it also changed my background home screen, saying infected in large letters,

Any internet browsers i opened would bring up search pages from info.co.uk????

Its taken me 2 days so far to get my pc back to normal again, anti virus avg would not shift them, had to do a new install,

Prob the worst virus ive had in 10 years. Seemed like an attack on my pc :confused:

i would try system restore firstly,i have had a few but not since purchasing NOD32...which pops along nicely and has caught some nasty stuff recently....also i would try "hijack this" if you are already infected

Yeah, Hijackthis is pretty good. Once you've done a scan, paste the log into http://www.hijackthis.de/ and it'll suggest files that you should remove. Pretty thorough but only do this if you know what what you're doing as it could royally mess up your PC.

I also highly recommend Avast AV which is free; it'll alert you when you visit an infected site. Upgrade to the Pro version and Avast will send folk round to your house who will physically remove your hand from your mouse to stop you from clicking through to infected sites.

We resell AVG AntiVirus software (feel free to PM me for a discount), however, they have free rescue disk you can download & burn to CD to do a system clean http://www.avg.com/gb-en/avg-rescue-cd. It might be worth a try as you get a clean boot rather than installing something on an already infected PC.

Sean,

If you get this spyware again, Malwarebytes will shift it via Windows Safe Mode. I have removed a few similar lately this way.

I agree. Safe mode is definitely the way to go to unsure that these issues are cleared. Of course I'm sure there are some that won't budge even under those conditions, but thankfully they're pretty rare. I have a malware bytes / norton 360 combo that seems to work pretty well.

Hope you get it sorted safely and soon. :)

Malware Bytes is a super piece of software - cleans my systems nicely and the free version is great to use/update.

I had exactly the same problem.

I tried Malwarebytes, Super Anti-Spyware, etc.etc. Nothing picked it up.

It turned out at some point I'd actually downloaded a fake version of AVG which apparently is quite a common thing. It infiltrates your system with all sorts of error messages, background writing etc., but nothing else seems to detect anything - or indeed the fake AVG !

To get rid of it I just googled for a fake AVG activation code, then thinking it was suitably recompensed it left me in peace and I was able to remove it.

It's a long shot, but if you have downloaded free avg etc, worth just checking that they aren't actually the culprit as the fake free AVG looked extremely convincing.

If this isn't the issue I hope it gets resolved.

Steve.

Ps. the fake AVG looked perfectly innocent for a few weeks, then it activated..

Thanks for the replies all.

I seem to be back to normal. Had some dodge startup programs loading when I looked at msconfig. Have disabled them. Will probably find my printer wont work now lol

Might have a fresh install of windows during the week anyway. Lots of clutter on my PC .... quicker just to start again from scratch! :)

Since there's of of replies on this thread, what software should have j stalled as a minimum as I'm currently only using avg free
Thanks

Ubuntu............ :)
Thats not a bad idea takes a bit of getting used to for the non tech orientated.
With norton costing about £14 on ebay its a no brainer. I've tried most of the free ones with me mum and she still manages to get the thing infected

When I had a problem a while back with something nasty I picked up from an attack site, Skinner recommended Spybot - Search And Destroy to me, and it worked fine.

The actual attack was wierd - it was from an article directory that had been hacked on the front page, although the rest of the site was working normally.

I got a year old copy of Norton from a remaindered bin. During the install it removed the patch that was keeping the XP going and locked me out ... had to reinstall XP ... don't get that problem with Avast!

I am online all day every day and use AVG free, keep Winows updated, run an occasional Malwarebytes scan and use a bit of common sense regarding sites I visit and touch wood seem to be trouble free.
