Does anyone else find that when you bang a url directly into address bar for some of you domains they don't resolve to website - yet when you do it a second time it always resolves?

It could be http://domain/co/uk or http://www.domain/co/uk

I tend to find this happens more often than not on low traffic not used much domains with a website - these sites are still established though so should resolve every time?

thanks - I shall investigate this.

This could be due to a number of things. Are you using the recursive and caching server specified to you by your ISP? If so, consider trying those offer by either OpenDNS or Google (the latter's are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). If this doesn't solve the problem try a fresh install of a browser with the minimum number of plug-ins. If that doesn't help try running a continuous ping to www.bbc.co.uk during, or as soon as the problem occurs and see if you get time-outs. If you do get time-outs then the problem could be related to your router or your home network.

The name servers of the registry aren't necessarily queried when one attempts to browse to a URL if the recursive and caching server ones computer is configured to use already has entries stored relating to the domain name. Here is one explanation of how DNS resolution works.
