need help with template

hello all i have recently downloaded a template for a mini site there were instructions with the site how ever it says, create a .htaccess file on your domain root (edit it and add the contents of htaccess.txt) which i dont have a clue how to do this. the site is up now but google say the site map has errors and the link pages dont work i just get a 404 error. would all this be down to not having a htaccess file???

oh and anyone that knows of sites with gud free templates please let me know. thanks forany help everyone...

Create a plain text file called .htaccess, add the text to the file and upload it to the server - no idea why you'd need a .htaccess file for a html template, seems a bit odd!

just tryed making a file, can it just be made in notepad? it wont let me put a . at the front of the htaccess? is this normal? i have dreamweaver8 if i can make it up another way?? thanks again

Notepad is fine, it may be a bit touchy about the name, save it as htaccess.txt then rename the file in windows explorer to .htaccess

Odds are the template needs .hta for mod_rewrite.

ahh try that an it worked but now the site says

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
and doesnt work when i upload the file.. is there anything id need to edit?

this is what i was told to add to the file..

I guess either the rewrite rules are screwed up or your server doesn't support mod_rewrite. Someone cleverer than me may be able to shed some light on it!

Make sure the chmod is set to 644 and nothing else.

Usually you can right click the file in your FTP Program, and look for CHMOD/Permissions.

It will usually say something like

Owner Group Public

With 3 options under each of the above.

Read Write Execute

You want owner Read+Write and the rest Read only.

i cant find it anywhere p'#ss$d off with this now ive tried so many things to change it and still nothing. if i add the ht file the site doesnt work, but when it does work i can only have one page and no links, thanks for your help anyway... think im gonna have to just sack the site off and find another template.

Sounds very complicated for a minisite template.

Why not do a quick google search for css/html templates?

Alot of the new wave of mini site templates are using RSS Feeds, and other Scraped data, as well as dynamically created pages.

I saw one that no matter what the page was like like domain.tld/acorndomains.html then the script would search and scrap using acorndomains.

All powered with PHP and Mod_Rewrite.

They are getting more and more complex, look at the bluesite template from residual income thats similar.

I havent used it to be honest, as I code 99% of my stuff in dreamweaver.

The author is on this forum, maybe worth looking him up here ?

Have you set the correct permissions as Skinner suggested, if not it's pointless asking the author for help until you've ruled that out?

i found the chmod tried to change it and it was no different with th .htaccess added and the page didnt show all content without the file so i put it back to the 755. i`ll keep trying... i might just transfer it all to html then its much easier to fiddle with and much more understandable.

well my site is businessadvertisement.co.uk.... the problem i`ve bin having all along is the links down the left hand side i have 1 up now which is advertise under links but this page goes to a 404 error as it does on the file you have uploaded. thats what i need to change/fix, that and getting the errors of google for the site map i submitted..thanks again, i`m sure we`ll get there.
