Hi,

I'm planning on building a GEO directory and need to decide which domain type to use.

So which is best, I have the option of either a .net or .org.uk. Both domain options have a hyphen (unfortunately) but I do have an option on the extension.

From a branding prospective .net seem better but harder work for SEO google ranking, which I don't mind as long as its only a marginal initial issue.

.org.uk seems better for SEO ranking but lacks the .net level recognition for building a brand.

As the site will be a directory could the org be just as suited as a .net.

I'd appreciate feedback and comments.

thansk :)

I would stay away from building a brand on a hyphenated .net or .org.uk

If it is for a mini-site and these were the only choices then i would grab the .org.uk as it will be easier to rank in google.co.uk

Thanks for the feedback.

Would building a brand on an un hyphenated .net be attractive?

Why are .net domains disliked by SEO?

From my own experience .net domains rank good on big G, but if they are more than 5 years old. It might be not entirely true, but I think the ranking for newer .net domains was affected after too many of them were used for Russian language websites. It is due to the simple linguistics – “Net” in Russian means “No”. Therefore percentage of non-English websites on .net rocketed and I think that affected SEO and ranking. Just thoughts…
