I'm surprised no ones started a thread about the 4th october update yet, unless I've missed it, but just wondered how people have faired - have you been whalloped by a fishy flipper?

I had 2 sites that were earning good money, they both got slapped a bit on the previous update (page 1 to page 2), this time they're gone, nowhere to be seen.

I've tried a little trick and got rankings back on page 1 for one site (where I was before the previous (was it August?) update), so I've tried the same trick with site no.2 - will see if it works again and if it sticks.

Anyone else had any joy with getting sites back apart from going through the old disavow links nightmare?

My sites moved up or stayed around there original positions, Last couple of days there has been some dance but only a place or two.. But i did do some on site work on the sites so its probably related..

My site on 4th came out if its penalty it suffered last September.....

......yesterday though it's disappeared again!!!

It seems to be a very severe update this one.

I've managed to get my 2nd sites rankings back now as well, in 1st no less, somewhere it hadn't been since the May update. Hope they stick.

I'm currently doing disavow links for 3 customers but it is an utter ball ache, it takes ages and is as boring as hell.

I've had a few sites slapped. I'm getting really sick of this. They rank well and I'm creating amazing content, just the 1 backlink and no spammy stuff. I deliver exactly what the users want - and I get slapped. Again.

Please could someone point me in the right direction to try and bring a site back from a slap? I don't want to move the site to a different domain :(

Yep noticed a lot of mine getting slapped, seems to be the ones that have Adsense on them to be honest. Maybe a pattern or need to look deeper.

:-?

With sites that have adsense I'm currently focussing on the 'metrics' indicating the performance, not sure if ticking the boxes helps with serps placements but I suspect it may have some bearing .... what do you think?

Here's where I've got so far.

Site health: 4/5 rating
Through a combination of various methods I've got up to 92% out of 100 for desktop & 82% for mobile (though none of my sites are optimised for mobile / tablet / ipad type devices). This has been done without a CDN :)

Revenue optimisation: 4/5 rating
Crawler errors ✓
Text and image ads enabled ✓
Recommended ad formats ? There's some placements I've not gone auto text/image since imo one or the other work better than both.

Google+: 5/5 rating
+1 button added ✓

I only have a couple of sites now that I'm bothered with the ranking factor so doing the above to potentially help keep them up there. Not sure if it's worth it or not lol.

I think the best thing to do nowadays is build a site without relying too much on google. Try and build your authority from the big social sites and anything else is an added bonus!

I am also wondering if above is true. I have a suspicion that google is slapping adsense sites with the view to getting more sign ups for Adwords.
I have a couple of great sites with little if no work on building links but both have great content and they have been slapped hard for their main keyword.
Whilst I have a few sites with no adsense and they have remained rock steady
Google could be in the persuit of bigger profits and see sites that use adsense as easy meat for sign ups
It's only speculation but it would help greatly if we knew what google actually wants from a website

When you say main keyword do you mean the EMD keyword/phrase? Wouldn't surprise me if they did another EMD purge. Can't see them targeting Adsense sites, unless it's just a subgroup to then apply EMD/BL profile quality filters...

- Yes

This is what im starting to think about the updates at google-

If google targeted adsense/affiliate sites and im guessing (very wild guess) there must be a million or so sites that use google adsense if you think of all the domainers around the world x how many sites they may have, anyway if over time they stopped making as much through adsense because of loss of rankings, google would have a ready made stream of new uptakes that actually, with a bit of training (and google seem to be pushing the training videos, seminars on how to use adwords lately) already understand how ad placements/costs work.
Lot easier targeting the people who are already in the game rather than contacting new businesses and explaining to them how it all works and trying to sign them up.

If you do the maths if only a small percentage go over to using adwords then you could be talking a fair decent amount, into the hundreds of millions i'd have thought.

It would also be benificial to google because I also think that google has to show that the websites that are built for adsense/affiliates dont get priority in serp because I believe it has a charge from some authorities that it is favoring its own in search engine results.

Its a win win for google, I think this is the plan/thinking inside google

Although I have been know to be wrong. In fact im always wrong acording to the wife :)

It's not enough that we have Nominet to contend with. Then it's Google. What a merry dance.

Slapped over and over but you get used to it. Funny that my one e-commerce site is still doing well..All part of the game

I have found the opposite of my sites have romped up the serps, in some cases even beating amazon and play down the page.

I haven't done any SEO on these names tho its all natural and most are EMD too, one one the average commission have been mid high x per sale, I'd say £7-15, I've had a few high £xx commissions, the highest being £87, next being £64, overall commission is up 10 fold.

I think because I've carried on updating regular, I've finally reaped some benefit.
