Sterling hit a 14-year record against the US dollar and Japanese yen as high UK interest rates attracted investors.
The pound rose above $1.99 on currency exchanges, almost breaking the key $2 rate. Against the yen it hit 241.42, a level not seen since September 1992.

Does anyone know a UK bank that offers a free dollar account or one with very low charges?

I can't say I do but when I have had money in Paypal in Dollars, it shows its value in pounds as well. A couple of months ago, I had $1.99 which was when dotster overcharged and then gave the money back. It was 95p for a while, then it went up to 99p recently. I recently paid for something with PayPal however. It'd be interesting to see what its value is now.

Note, that's going from dollars to pounds, not sure if the same works with pounds to dollars. If it does, surely you're getting free money? :-D
