Interesting, but fighting a losng battle. There's not many pre-nominet names left now... or at least not many without the processed 'registered pre 1996' in the whois.

Why they moaning about dropping prenoms?

There being dropped cos' no one paid the renewal fees.

It's nothing about drops. It's about control.

They're moaning about having to comply to Nominets terms & conditions & control. Someone will correct me no doubt, but before Nominet domains were registered and controlled at root server level and also had different conditions regarding ownership. Under nominet there's no 'ownership' of domains just an entry on the register, paid for biannually. Also pre-nominet have no complience to the DRS. Dispute was normally at court level.

Sort of but not quite. Before Nominet a volunteer group of LINX members called the Naming Committee did it and volunteers ran the .uk and .co.uk (and others) nameservers.

I've covered this here http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/38153-post44.html

All along I haven't quite understood what legal nicety Nominet has been relying upon to be able to quite so confidently present Pre-Nominet registrants with this 'sign up or lose it' ultimatum....something akin to a fait accompli.

Has there never been a legal challenge?

""No contract, get lost"

hahahaaa I like that :p Guess Nom could do that and be just dandy.
