Hi,

I've manged to secure the .co.uk domain for my online business but missed out on the .com. Is there any way I can prevent the .com owner from copying my website? It's quite a new idea only seen another couple of examples like it but really don't want to go to all the effort and cost just to drive possible traffic to a .com and then they can compete with me.

Thanks for any help.

well unless you patent your idea, if not any sites can use the idea.

They can't copy the contents or looks. but everyone can steal your idea.

Or maybe you can setup a company or business with that website, that might give you some strength in court.

anyway why bother with all this? it will cost you loads in the end. If it's not a excellent name then buy the .com for a few thousands now and save yourself the trouble later, especially you're serious in this project of yours.

There is no effective way to protect an idea through intellectual property law. Copyright protects expression and patent law protects inventions, and neither protect ideas. In both cases the idea is the first step, but without some identifiable embodiment of the idea there can be no intellectual property protection.

That means you ought to proceed to move on your idea to the point where it is concrete enough to be more than what the law would call “mere ideas.” alone these cannot be protected, so you need to think in terms of invention…?
