key words are a significant factor in domain values, especially as you go up the price scale. However, in the low to mid hundreds most "sensible" names are likely to find a buyer, in time. Here are a couple of my unusual sales

How did you go about finding a buyer or did they come to you?

The total sales value of the aforementioned names was around £1900, which is not big bucks, but such sales are regular and easy to manage.

I do nothing to market domains, I don't even have a website as such, although I have a considerable stock of website addresses.

As a rough estimate I reckon at least 40% of all .co.uk domains are registered in the hope of reselling them for a profit. By comparison, the number of actual sales is tiny. There are several obstacles to overcome when selling domains, the most prevalant of these must be unrealistic prices - sedo.co.uk have imposed an upper limit of £5000, so most sellers now invite offers (presumably such offers must be over £5000).

I can appreciate the desire to evaluate any prospective buyer before you set the price for a domain, but most buyers have no way of knowing what is a reasonable price, and if the seller doesn't know (or does know but is trying to get a lot more) then a sale is unlikely to result.

Selling domains is a complex subject, not helped by the fact that every domain is unique, so direct comparisons are impossible.

Yes setting a price is always a challenge, when a prospective buyer says "how much?" - how do you qualify the asking price?

Names and their traffic are all different - it's a tough one.

Well, you can never be sure what a domain is really worth. The real test is how much a buyer is willing to pay. You can accept a figure now or hope for more in the future. The price does not really depend on the depth of the buyers pockets, and in most cases if the price is too high - he will settle for alternative name.

If you take the base cost as a reg fee, then even a sale at £100 is a reasonable return, very few sales are as low as £100. A few months ago I picked up an uncommon surname (10,900 results on Google) and a few days later I received an email saying

"Hi - see you managed to blag this one from 24carat domains - well done you, -not great for me however.
Anyway, I offered him £200 for it and he said no, so I waited - i'll make you the same offer.
Let me know"

So the previous registrant had rejected an offer of £200 for this domain - but could not or would not pay reg fee to renew it. I've had several similar sales like this.

simple really... For the non-technically minded, they might just not see the long-term prospects for popular domains, and still live in the dot.com boom era. People move on, emails get lost, domains get released...

btw... I think the dot.com boom has yet to happen. vive la broadband!
