Spammers are using my email address...

This has never happened to me before, but from today it seems that some african spammer has taken a liking to my first name and personal email address.

I am getting hundreds and hundreds of bounce back emails, which is leading me to think this spammer is sending out thousands and thousands of spam emails with my personal email address in the reply box....

Does this happen often. I take it there is nothing I can Do?

Do they normaly move on, or am I likely to be getting this every day now?

Have none of the bounces included the original message?


I have had this happen to me loads of times with one particular domain. They will move on. If your lucky it will last a few days. If you're not they will keep popping up now and again for a good few weeks.

Normally, blacklisting the spammers IP Range/Domain solves the problem. To do this file a complaint with the spammers register or host.

It really is quite annoying, Mat.

These people have pre-maid programs scouring the net for wildcards such as *@*.co.uk. They will pick your e-mail from message boards like this, your own websites, ect...

All my e-mail’s (work) go through our Barracuda ‘Spam & Virus’ Firewall. I think if you took a look at the stats from this month alone you would be shocked at the amount of mail deemed spam (Just over 7,300).

It is a constant battle against spammers, and when they get reported they will simply change host’s and IP ranges. That’s why going to the source slows down the spam quicker.

It’s got to the point now that we do not have the time or the patience to manually report these guys, hence why we have invested in Barracuda. I tell you this it is well worth the money, nothing that isn’t legit has got through yet, touch wood.

:lol: scambaiters seed websites with their scambaiting email addresses for the scammers to harvest them, then when an email gets sent, unfortunatley this time with your addy as the reply to addy, scambaiters will start replying to you thinking you are the scammer

Mat, can you send me a copy of the scam email with his email address, I'll post it our surplus section at 419eater, and guarantee the scammer will get extra special attention from some friends

Thing is I have made sure never to leave it as plain text on any sites or forums.

The only mention of it is on my website which is a graphic which is where they probably found it when googling the first name they were going to use!

You can add SPF records which may allow some MTAs to drop the message rather than bounce it. Not going to help all that much though. Only other thing is decent antispam which isnt cheap.

One of my sites is used about every 6 months, usually leads to MSN/Hotmail/Etc blacklisting your email address and gmail sometimes kill your server IP range as well for a few days/weeks.

Ensure you have set your reverse dns and spf accurately as alot of the sites will filter your mail with this and it helps get off blacklists and spammer lists.
