A friend of mine emigrated to St Martin approx 9 months back and we keep in contact via facebook from time to time.

A few months ago, he messaged me and said he couldn't believe how close the airport was to the beach and how low the planes flew prior to landing - he described it as truly breath taking.

I looked on youtube for some videos and this is the one where I could only express virtually how breath taking it must be !

YouTube - St. Maarten 747 Landing

Did you see soccer am yesterday, had videos of soldier standing on a runway while a fighter jet flew over, must of missed the guys head by inches.

I didn't see it, but funny you said that as I saw that video a couple of weeks ago but cannot for the life of me find a link to it ! :)

I was going to post that video in the original post too !

There's a video on there too taken at that airport of a 747 taking off in the same direction, and blowing people on the beach hundreds of yards into the sea with the jet blast. Will look for it.

The crosswind landings are amazing, very skilled pilots.

I was playing a round of golf yesterday in strong winds, right next to Manston Airport two planes were continuously taking off and landing and you could see the wind affecting the planes. Amazing.

I've done the Kai Tak approach over Kowloon a few times (the old airport) and I can tell you that's one hell of an experience. The plane is so low you can see what's on TV in some of the high rise apartments, and then that huge and sudden bank to the right over the checkerboard. First time I did it, the pilot never announced it or gave any 'warning' - every time after that there was a warning announced to all passengers.

Take your pick of these:

Blimey! That's a Harrier by the look of it. Instant dishonourable discharge material I'd guess.

Yup, I agree (there's a first). Scruffy old airport that was. Corkscrew'd down to landing, those Cathey pilots knew their stuff. Only a cheap taxi drive then too!

Yep! My first trip on that route was on Cathay from Vancouver to HK. Always happy to ride Cathay 'cos they employ mostly ex-Air Force Brit and Aussie pilots -- the best in the world ;)

Did quite a few subsequent landings there with other carriers, but some disappointingly via the ocean approach (other end). You needed special certification to pilot the Kowloon approach. You also needed certifying to be a passenger on it I think if you get my drift.
