So regarding .uk domains (ie nominet) 1&1 have a transfer out fee in their T&C but I see from nominet account it should be possible to transfer them yourself. Anyone done this and if so do 1&1 chase you for anything afterwards ?

Thanks.

I think maybe you are wrong about 1&1, as their site says:
.uk Domains

For every new order of co.uk, .me.uk and .org.uk in the Instant Domain package or ON-Domain ordered in the term mentioned above, you will get the first year of registration for only £2.49.

After the initial discounted period, the standard rates for registration apply. Payments are based on a 24 month billing cycle, which means that when you register you will be charged for the first 24 months of your contract. There are no restrictions on cancelling the domain name registration, nor for transferring the domain name to another provider, however do note that no refund will be given.

The most well known for this practice was UK2 (don't know if that still do it though).

The Nominet option was introduced to assist the registrant in circumstances where they felt that transferring was proving problematic with their current registrar. The good thing about this is there is no dicking about with the Nominet method, it is straight forward and simple, and is suitable for bulk moves to reduce costs. And at least the registrar doesn't get away with squeezing you where a squeeze hurts most, your wallet!

I just transferred a bunch from my 1&1 to my own tag. You need to go to a different website: https://contract.oneandone.co.uk/ then you have to tell it to cancel a part of your contract (which is worrying!) but then you can choose transfer to a new tag. Then they send an email which you have to click on to confirm. It did work in the end though! Just make sure you don't CANCEL everything!!

I had a whole load of problems trying to transfer out these domains using their contract.oneandone.co.uk system.

I ended up doing it the nominet way. It was very easy and I transfered everything out for £15 I think.

I dont think 1&1 have an official fee to transfer out but be very careful even if you do it throough nominet.

In my case I had to do it through nominet because 1and1 didn't recognize the tag I was trying to transfer the names to. It was my own tag and wasn';t in their tag database and so it didn't exist!

Many calls later they kept telling me my tag didnt exist, complete muppets so I did it through nominet.

I thought this would be the last of my prob;lems with them, but they continued charging me for names that were no longer on their tag and that I was renewing myself on my own tag. After calling them they insisted that the names are registered with them (because they see them in the control panel!!!) and so they kept charging my credit crad until I cancelled my card.

1and1 has been the worst company to deal with in my life. Not just the worst domain company but the worst business ever.

It's ok for people and companies to make mistakes, but when you explain everything and they continue to charge you, and then you let them know again and they still charge you... then they ignore emails but still charge you for services and domains no longer registered with them, it is ridiculous.

I still don't think I got all of the money back from them.

Who was it that was taking 1&1 to court , did it get anywhere?

Thanks all. I think I will be getting out via nominet.

And cancelling my credit card !
