Wanted: Website Review Trying my hand at WP

All sites I plan to dev long term are in WP.

It all depends if you want to use a template and tweak it to hell to get the desired look or get a bespoke design done and have it as a WP template.

I like WP and you can use it for every application thinkable and if their isnt a pluging to do something you want, thiers someone out there that can build one.

Although I still have lots to do on it Humber.tv is my latest WP bespoke theme.

What are you looking from WP? many sites with a similar theme to bang them out or new bespoke designs and functions?

I had this knocked together from a theme I liked and totally mashed it up. http://HullDoors.co.uk and then used it for MANY other domains.

Questions about WP would be better. ;)

I haven't really poked around wordpress in 4 years until recently, and I always built my sites in dreamweaver but wordpress has been requested by clients and makes selling sites easier.

I generally find a theme I like, then I hack the css, adjust the images and alter the php code into what I like.

The basic steps are remove the date feature, change the wording of older/newer, remove the title on pages and then its customising to the nature of the product after that :)

What he said.

Wordpress is cool, I just remove all of the commenting options from the code if I'm building a website rather than a blog, and remeber to add lots of pretty pictures.

Apart from people prefering pictures, it helps with Google images.

Thanks guys! Appreciated. Will remove commenting as it's not really supposed to be a blog.

Don't do it Dale :D, get on Joomla before it is too late. Knock a full good looking site in under an hour and the base there for massive development if needed later on.

Someone else also told me that on another forum Graeme. I remember looking at it yonks ago and not getting the hang of it. Will revisit!

Problem was mate you probably seen joomla 1.0, since 1.5 2 years ago, it's a different story and much much easier to use.

! tip, go to rockettheme.com and look at the module map of a site and where you place a module it will end up on your site. Once you have seen that it all falls into place.

By the way was down your end last week, at Lympstone. Unfortunately got whisked off to your other local venue the Royal Deveon and Exeter, intensive care unit (only for obs, they thought I was badly:() and going to the registry in the sky.

Back now, just lol.

Wordpress sucks. The backend software is a convoluted mess of old procedural code & hacked in classes. It loads everything bar the kitchen sink each time to call a page, and the database schema is an unholy mess... whoever thought up the taxonomy wants shooting. Every db call requires convoluted joins, left joins even just to get a simple set of posts. It's a product of timing and not quality.

Thing is it works and the community support... including the caching plugins are what have kept it from sinking like phpNuke & postnuke... for now!

Do I use it? Yes. Unfortunately. Would I pay to use it. No.

Thing is I'm not sure why people still use it, don't get me wrong I know people are not daft. So there must be something that it has over joomla, or maybe people just tried the old joomla and gave up on it.

Despite it's inherent frailties...

easy to install
plenty of themes, free & premium
a plugin for nearly every eventuality
templating is relatively straight forward
